Gresham, OR the end of the second lap, locking in the top four spots, allhough Bowers remained close, losing by only lWO lengths. Smith had a fairly easy time repeating as winner of the 250cc Amateur class, which resembled more of a survival of the fittest contest. In the early going Harold Dorsey, Mervin Sensenig and Wayne Franklin trailed. Sensenig and Franklin traded third during the middle laps. The pack started to thin out around the middle of the event as Dorsey low-sided in four, and Sensenig dropped out. Jeremy Himmel wright and Barry Wolfe then hooked up in a battle for third that went to the wire. In other Amateur action, the small bikes put on a pretty good show, as Mike Sponseller and Kevin Varnes hooked up for another one of their classic battles. Spons~ller led the first half, with Varnes taking the lead just past halfway and holding on to win by three lengths. Results SR: 1. Bob Babcock (Hon); 2. Harold Hillard (Vam); 3. (206) 531-4688 2: Tinnery tops Ross DownsMX By Brad Craine DALLAS, TX, APR. 3 On the eve of the Dallas supercross, Ross Downs' regular Friday night riders had some fast competition from out of state, as well as from many new faces from all over Texas. Close to 100 competitors provided . the action for 10 different classes. The Experts came out for their 10 . lap moto with holeshot artist Dean Lane, aboard his KTM, showing the fast way into the first tum. The popular Euless rider remained out front until lap six when Plano's Terry Tinney made a great inside move on Lane and the duo banged bars. While all this was going on up front, Oklahoma City's Clay Hoenshcm battled California Honda support rider, Jeff Glass for third. (Hoenshell looked at home aboard his D&S Kawasaki-sponsored KX250. The ex-Suzuki rider will campaign the Green Machine for the '87 race season.) Tinney wound up with first overall, followed by Hoenshell, Lane, Glass, and Tim Silence. The stadium motocross track came to life when 17 125cc Beginners lined up at the gate for their second moto. Honda-mounted Michael Reid led the group for the five-lap moto, but his 14th place finish in the first heat netted him seventh overall. Grapev'ine- Yamaha sponsored Jeremy Deleon's smooth and consistent racing (4-2) earned the YZI25 rider first overall. Lance Summers ended the night with second, followed by Team Idiot's Miles Moore on his KXI25 and Bedford's Todd Holder. Eddie Jordan rounded out the top five. Results M/MINt 1. John Heath (Kaw); 2.
