Women's Expert class winner Mercedes Gonzalez (right) and the rest
of the Women's class blast off the line at the Sunrise GP.
Gus Vounlozos held 0[£ Chris
Panek's Yamaha to win the Pee Wee
B class. The Pro and Intermediate
classes were next and Team honda
rider Mickey Dymond brought out
his 125 today. When the gate fell
Dymond took the lead position and
never looked back. Fighting for
second place honors were honda·
mounted Rich Truchinski, O'Neal's
Aron martin and Torco's Willy
musgrave now mounted on a Suzuki
RM125.
This trio stayed in a tight pack
with Truchinski finally taking
second. In third was Martin at the
checkers. Moto two was up for grabs
as Dymond experienced some problems on the back of the course and
came around the scoring tower six
seconds behind the pack. In a matter
of two laps Dymond launched him·
self of a jump past third and fourth
and into second.
He made a double jump that no
one else coulil equal. Musgrave had
the lead, but the factory Honda
showed a definate power power
advantage and soon powered by.
Next Dymond demonstrated to the
spectators why he is a factory rider
as he railed the very top line on a
45 0 banked corner, turned his bike
venually sideways -off the tabletop
and made every double on the course
look like it was nothing more than
sand piles. Musgrave took second in
stride with Martin scoring back to
back third's for third overall.

Sunrise GP
By David Procida
ADELANTO, CA-, MAR. 29
Sunday's Grand Prix at Sunrise
Cycle Park ~w a surprise appearance
in the Women's class by Team
Green's Mercedes Gonzale2, Tami
Rice and the CRC's Number One
Women's class plate holder Mindy
Smith. Gonzalez picked up the class
victory after progressively stretching
out a lead throughout the race.
When the flag fell at the start of
the Women's class race, K.O. Halfhill surprised everone on the line and
carried the lead into turn one.
Halfhill's lead was short-lived as
Gonzalez was quickly into the lead,
followed closely by Rice.
By the start of lap two Gonzalez
held a lO-second lead over Rice and
third-place Halfhill, who was controlling the Intermediate class lead.
Gonzalez held a comfortable margin
all the way to the checkered flag. Rice
was slowed late in the race by a flat
rear tire, but managed to hold on for
second overalb--Mindy Smith worked
her way past Halfhill and into the
Intermediate class lead near the
hallway point and held it all the way
to the end for third overall.
Former National pro Gary Ogden
made an appearance in the Vet class,
but got off to a slow start when his
bike wouldn'tstarl. Tony Milner had
the early lead while Ogden was left
to work his way through the pack.
Ogden was soon on the tail of
Kawasaki-mounted Kenny Zahrt,
who was holding down second place.
Ogden followed Zahrt for one lap,
but was quickly past and began to
move in on Milner. Ogden got by
Milner on the same lap and cruised
in for the victory in spectacular
fashion. Ken Ehlers had moved into
second, bouncing Zahrt back to
third.
