admission and was not concerned about the image of racing, this would all be funny, but I did and I am. It sure would be comforting to read a statement from all those pro riders whose names appear in the credits sayin~ that they neglect to thoroughly review the script and simply did not realize the disservice they were performing. Hal "Not In My Back Yard" Bernson is running in the primary election to be held on Tuesday, April 14, I hope the enclosed letter will help you decide how to vote. If you do not vote, then you deserve another Cranston, JERRY COUNTS AMA District 37 Land Use Committee Canoga Park, CA The letter which Counts refers to is reprinted below, It was sent to Ms. Dorothea Hoffman, Ms, Hoffman is project coordinator of the County of Los Angeles Department of Parlts and Recreation's Off-Highway Vehicle Committee . . , Editor. Dear Ms. Hoffman: I am in full support of your effort to obtain a suitable, permanent site for off-highway vehicles as long as it meets with the approval of the community as well as its elected officials, There is a definite need for such a legalized area. . However, at this time I would like to clarify my position regarding the location of this facility, I will not now, nor in the future, support any site location for this program within the 12th Councilmanic District. Photo by Milut Church, Watsonian Rally Here it is April and most motorcycle riders, especially those from the colder regions., hav~ made ~heir siJmmer plans. That IS what wmter is for back East. Has anyone heard about the 75th Anniversary Watsonian Sidecar Rally that will be held in England in early August? Not one word about this imponant event has appeared in any of the many motorcycle journals I subscribe to. It isn't news until it appears in Cycle News, and none of the West or East Coast publications have received any advance information on this rally, None of my English friends, including those who helped organize the new English motorcycle museum in Birmingham, know a thing about the August rally. Neither Classic Bike magazine nor any of the motorcycle C9P journals know anything either. Congratulations, Doug Bingham and friends, you really know how to keep a secret. Count me out of the party; I have made other plans for August. It has been my expeiience that if a Californian can't phone, he will not bother to follow up on any event, no matter how important, JACK MERCER New Canaan, cr The 75th. Anniversary Watsonian Sidecar Rally will take place over Great Britain's Bank Holiday weekend, August 1-2·3, at the National Motorcycle Museum near Bir- CRAiG COLUNS Newell, NC mingham, For more information, we suggest you write Watson ian Sidecars Ltd., N orthwick Business Center, Blockley, Moreton-in Marsh, Gloucestershire GL56 9lfF, England , , , Editor, Allow me to say one word. Stand up and be counted After all the training, all the practice, all the traveling, all the preparation, all the effort and all the expense, Malcolm Tunstall of Syd's Cycles in St, Petersburg, Florida, entered the Pro Twins 10000c GP race at Daytona on a Bimota DBI 750cc and finished an excellent fifth - and you wrote he was on a Harley! LAWRENCE WISE Cosmopolitan Motors, Inc. Hatboro, PA The light that might fail CC made good sense in his article on the helmet law (CC Writer, issue #10) that could become law in California. I too, like you, am tired of it all and it ~. makes me sick to see this ust thing 'n allover again in your state, Ca 'fomia always was considered the "light at the end of the tunnel" to us riders who were forced to wear helmets at all times. The Massachusetts Governor (Mike Dukakis) who vetoed our repeal bill twice is now running for the U.S. Presidency in the Democratic primary. Hope he gets his ass kicked. He was in favor of a seat belt law, but a public referendum on the ballot canceled the law a few months after it was in effect, BOB FRINK The Motorcyclist's Post Rochdale, MA Passing footnote I appreciate the credit for third place in the 500cc Sportsman Vintage race at Daytona, Howev~r, just to set the record straight, I was riding a BSA Vietor 500 single, not a golden Flash which is a 650 twin, I realize that to most people BSA is just a passing foomote in the motorcycle story and that those of us who persist in racing them are probably certifiable, but we manage to have fun and occasionally show _ our rear tire to everyone, Just ask Ted Hubbard. DAVID P, MATTHEWS Raleigh, NC Two words, plus Please allow me to say two words about the recently released movie entitled Winners Take All. It stinks! Every professional motocross rider involved with this trash should hang his head in utter shame, We all know who you are because your names appear in the castirlg credits. . I certainly would not have begun racing motocross if the spon even vaguely resembled the scenario put forth by this movie. Thus, I can't expect anyone to be favorably impressed by the gross misinformation it contains. If I had not paid For the past two years vocational classes at Los Angeles Trade-Tech have been under attack by six members of the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees with only one incumbent, Hal Garvin, apinst class closures, This fact was driven home last September when the vending machine technology class was closed and its instructor permanently laid off, Just last week 57 more layoff letters were received. In the cabinet making department an instructor was also permanently laid off. If you have been a reader of Cycle News for any length of time you will surely relate to the name Bruce Hammer, the founder of Team Hammer and a former'pro road racer, Even thou~h Bruce gets around in a wheelchair these days, the skills he learned as a cabinet maker at LA. Trade-Tech still provide his main source of income. Thousands of countless other people have benefited from the over 70 different skills taught at the school. Now is the time when most of the voters in Los Angeles and neighboring communites can vote for a change, but only 10~ of registered voters usually vote. Three candidates closely associated with L.A, Trade-Tech are running to protect millions of dollars spent by many industries who have donated products and equipment that have kept the school highly productive since 1925, Marjorie Davis, former associated student body president, has been encouraged to run by none other than Louis ''The Phantom Duck" McKey. Dr. Richard Ferraro taught night classes for seven years, . enabling many students who could not attend day classes to obtain an employable skill. Bill Orozco graduated from L.A, Trade-Tech in 1941 with a trade in printing and has been involved with teaching niJht classes, He also finances an on-gomg schOlarship . for financially struggling students. If you are qualified to vote you should already have a ballot for the April 14 primary election, If you have any questions or can offer any support, please call slate headquarters at 8]8/500-1949 or Marjorie Davis at 2]317~1-8]54.The battle now is not just to save the motorcycle program, but it has turned into a war to save L.A. TradeTech College, the leader in vocational education since 1925. Please consider the slates of Davis, Ferraro and Orozco and spread the word to your friends and neighbors. In racing terminology, if we lose this chance they will use us for traction. PAT OWENS Instructor, Motorcycle Repair L.A. Trade-Tech Los Angeles, CA
