Welcome S&S Sproc_-~ Rt. 1. 110_ 3 ' " - T~ Rest. SC 2"10 Canyon Raceway By Michael Ross PHOENIX, AZ, MAR. 29 Honda House-sponsored Chappy Blose took the 125cc Expert title with Brian Pryor taking the 250cc Expert crown on his Young Cycle/Kal-Gard/ Scott-sponsored Kawasaki during the final round of racing at Canyon Raceway Sunday.. Blose and Pryor had battled all series long for the 125cc title with Pryor going into the final race with a two point advantage. Before the race, 17-year-old Pryor seemed sure of success while Blose, the 26-yearold veteran was guarded regarding the outcome. Pryor's hopes of victory evaporated shortly after the gate dropped. Blose shot into the lead with David McDermott and Curtis Culbert in pursuit. Pryor went wide in the first turn and then tangled with John Woodly. Both riders went down; Woodly got away first as Pryor kicked and kicked to restart his Kawasaki while the seven rider pack left. Blose led every lap of the nine-lap moto and headed straight to the finish line while Pryor tried to get around third place Culbert. Pryor took over third on lap seven, closing the gap slightly on second place McDermott, but the finish order was et. McDermott's Honda led Blose, Pryor and Culbert into the first turn in mow two. McDermott set a blistering pace, but bogged his motor and fell in a left hand turn on lap two. Blose took the lead with Pryor less than a bike length behind. Culbert trailed the leaders with McDermott reentering the race behind him. Pryor passed Blose on lap six and stretched his lead to 10 seconds'over Blose at the finish line. McDermott took third with Culbert a distant fourth. The first 250cc Expert moto saw Pryor grab the holeshot and lead lap one. With the pressure off, Pryor's riding was much smoother as he raced to the finish line leading second place Blose by a considerable margin. Eric Kirk fell hard on lap four severely tWlsung his Jeft leg. McDermott stopped to help, but Kirk gamely remounted and rejoined the race, albeit way behind. Kirk finished in fourth behind McDermott. Moto two was the most exciting race of the afternoon. Pryor took the holeshot with Blose, McDermott and Kirk in tow. McDermott and Kirk stuffed Blose in turn three, a tight left hand hairpin, knocking him down. Blose remounted in last place. "I was really mad .when they (McDermott and Kirk) stuffed me so I turned up the wick," said Blose. Pryor led McDermott by three seconds with Kirk challenging McDermott at every turn, while Blose' trailed Kirk by five seconds. Pryor continued to stretch his lead on lap four as Blose moved up to join the McDermott/Kirk battle. A blanket could have covered the. three riders as they waged war on each other, passing and repassing. Up front, Pryor's shift lever broke knocking him out of contention, then Blose took third from McDermott who was totally exhausted and fell way back. Blose yelled' at Kirk to move over. Kirk doubled his efforts and fought on for another lap, but finally got passed by Blose on Suicide Hill. Blose took the checkered flag in first ahead of Kirk. Pryor had continued on, tucked in gear, to finish third. The 250cc Amateur race was another nail-biter. Todd Cup led Marv Chapman and Chris Jordan to the first turl) in moto one with Kyle Killebrew in fourth. Killebrew was in third on the second lap as these three fought tooth and nail. Cup fell on lap four handing first to Chapman. Cup re-entered the race in third as Killebrew looked for daylight around Chapman. The two Honda riders battled for the entire moto, but Chapman took the win. Moto two saw Killebrew lead lap one ahead of Chapman, Jordan and Rick Nagle. Chapman challenged Killebrew for three laps before getting around him, then Killebrew faded quickly and dropped back to fifth. Nagle took the lead from Chapman on lap six and raced home for the win. Chapman took second ahead of Cup. Results PEE WEE: 1. Scott Young (Han); 2. M.rk Lindsey (Y.m). JR: 1. Jimmy Mokry (K.w); 2. Drai Nichols (K.wl; 3. J.son Matthews (Kaw). . . MINI BEG: 1.
