I Rice scores at Ocala MX By Gwen Millan OCALA, FL., MAR. 14 Spectators got their money's worth at Ocala's motocross Saturday as Tom Rice, Wes Keenum and Justin Jackson put on a good battle f9r the top honors in the 125cc A class. Rice came out the winner as with a 1-1 score. Rice grabbed the holeshot in the first moto with Jackson and Keenum close behind. For the first few laps these three riders ran in tight formation, but on lap three Jackson forced his way past Rice and took over the lead. Jackson's lead was short-lived as he crashed and dropped back, handing the lead to Rice. Rice was able to hold off Keenum for the rest of the moto and took the win. Rice grabbed the early lead in the second moto, but was again being pressured by Jackson for the top spot. This time it only took one lap for Jackson to Ret around Rice and he quickly started to pull away. On the seventh lap Jackson got sent over the bars and crashed out of the race. Mter Jackson went out Rice and Keenum were again left to battle for the lead, but as in the first moto Rice again grabbed the win with Keenum second and Robert Cassube was third. Denny Williams captured the Open Pro victory. With Williams taking a lead in the Open Pro class, the real race was for second, third and fourth positions. As the checkered flag fell it was Charles Southgate second followed by Wymond Schleyhahn and Todd Booten. The crowd pleaser of the day came in the Speedway class. The out to welcome the East Coast Enduro Association's 1987 season at the Scrub Pine Enduro. Bruce Dengler edged out Jack Lafferty Jr. for the overall victory in the season's first enduro. The soft Jersey "sugar" sand is very widely' known for its habit of turning into bike swallowing moguls after the first 20 numbers have passed, making an early spot in the drawing a must, but the rain firmed up the sugar and also kept down the dust. Ocean County Competition Riders started the riders into an 18 mph woods section with scores at the first check showing that many riders, including most of the AA class, had let their time-keeping skills get rusty over the winter months. It could have been that they were so ea~ to get back into enduro compeution that time-keeping was completely forgotten. Whatever the reason, a large majority of riders showed up at least a minute early at the 7.5 check station. The checkers on top of Forked River Mountain anxiously awaited the first rider at the end of a grueling 10-mile tight woods section. First to appear was Mike Kopie, six minutes and 17 seconds late. Kopie eventually rode to the High Point B win and an impressive fourth overall. Line 12 seemed to be the "hot" number for the day. Three of the four riders placed first in their respective classes. Mike Maresca captured the first place B 125cc trophy even though he lost his score card somewhere along the way and had to take a 10% penalty assessmenL Mark Young placed first in the A FourStroke class and John Cooper rode his Honda to a Super Senior class win on his first ride in the "advanced age" class. Also riding on number 12 and hotter yet was John Rogers who was among the AA class riders caught early at the first check. Rogers was also early at check 10 and the added early points dropped him to eighth overall for the day. Jack Lafferty Jr., four-time ECEA Grand Champion, and Hondamounted Bruce Dengler fou~ht it out all day for the overall wm. Both riders were early at the first check and then at the third check, the first emergency check of the day, Lafferry arrived one minute and 58 seconds late while Dengler was two minutes and seven seconds late. Dengler got his point back at the check on top of the mountain when he arrived six minutes and 12 seconds down while Lafferty posted an even seven minute drop. At the end of the day when the scoring was finished, both riders had a 12 point drop with Dengler coming out ahead by 45 seconds after the three emergency tie breakers were computed.
