Team Suzuki celebrated their new Suzuki contract in Atlanta; Pete Carroll (leftl. Mike Harth (centerland team vice~presidentJohn.U1rich. transported a rider; a 40-minute delay followed. The red flag was a blessing for the Human Race Team; Human Race had passed Solmax, while" they were making a pit stop, to take the Heavyweight Production lead two laps before the red flag. Had Solmax waithed for two more laps befor,e pitting, they almost certainly would have won their class. On the restart, Dutchman, with Brauneck, passed Team Suzuki to unlap themselves, but there was too little time for Brauneck to make up a whole lap, even with Team Suzuki .a t less than 100 percent. At the checkered flag, Team Suzuki had about a half-lap lead over Dutchman Racing. After the race, team vice-president and co-founder John Ulrich said that this was the first race for the team's new bike and several bugs needed. to be worked out before the next round • at Willow Springs in southern California. The Dutchman crew was disappointed at finishing second after being consistently faster on the track. "Not having quick tire change capabilities really hutt us," team captain Dave Schlosser said. "In the AMA series we rarely do tire changes, so it's difficult to bear-teams that are used to it in this series. The Mediumweight Production. race went down to the wire with Yamaha FZ600-mounted Charm City Racing holding off JlT Racing and R&W Racing in the last hOUL. Team Suzuki completed 227 laps, covering 477 miles at an average speed of 79.45 mph. Sprint races were held on Sunday and Mike Harth was the big winner, taking home $2300 frojD Suzuki for his wins in the A and B Production races. Harth won the B Production by seven seconds over Doug Polen. The Texan was battling a very bad cold, and when Harth blasted away in the rain, Polen could only hope for second place. Harth won again under bizarre circumstances·in the A Production race. This time on a drier track, Polen shot out to a nine-second lead over the tight second-place battle between Harth, Jamie James and Larry Shorts. The Dunlop tire technicians were giving Polen pit signals and halfway through the race Polen realized that he could back off a little bit. The Dunlop people were confident that the race was over and they left their post, leaving Polen without pit signals. Meanwhile, Harth and company could see that they were catching Polen. With two laps to go, Harth passed an amazed Polen. With the track still wet except for a narrow racing line, Polen had no chance to repass and the race belonged to Harth. Afterwards, a dejected Polen sat in his trailer saying that he had learned a valuable lesson. Harth, on the other hand, was· ecstatic after his wins. "I've never raced in the rain on production tires, but I guess I'm alright at it." Harth's racing program is backed by Michelin and Harth Racing and Cycles' of Longwood, Florida. Graham James won four races aboard his Honda Hurricane. James' most exciting race was a come-frombehind victory over KuFt Hall in C Production. Hall led most of the race, but with two laps to go the skies opened up and he slid off the slick tra,ck. James rode carefully and got past Hall for the win. • Yamalube 2, 4 & R are designed for motorcycles, with a blend of additives designed specificaDyfor mot.orcydeengines.
