McGrath nearly caught Dye from behind but had to settle for second for the moto and second overall behind .the surprisingly fast Dye. Easley finished third ahead of Fine. David Donatoni bested a huge field of Open Beginners on board his Honda. Donatoni rode two nearly flawless motos to sweep the race ahead of Honda rider Chuck. Bagwell as Jay Spear rounded out the top three on another Honda. Buddy Antunez powered his Suzuki to the 80cc Expert Modified win over rival Joel Albrecht on a Kawasaki. Suzuki rider Dana Wiggins powered past Kawasaki pilot Derek Natvig to win the 80cc Intermediate Modified title with Yamahamounted Larry Lemire taking third James Otwell danced his Kawasaki to the 60cc win by posting a 1-2 score to outpoint runner-up Travis Preston's 3-1. MAR. 5 International Championship Events/I.C.E. planned a special championship to commemorate their 10th Anniversary, traveling to Canada to hold the Laball's International Ice Speedway Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Thursday. Mark Borgman took the victory in front of 8000 excited Canadian fans. The fans had much to be excited about as the first ever Canadian vs. American event shaped up to be quite a bailIe. The first race was indicative of the excitement to come as three restarts were required due to first lap spills. Fortunately, no one was injured and on the fourth try the race was completed with American John Lewis the winner, Canadian Shawn Venables second. Joel Monell of the U.S. third place and Canadian John Boasman finishin~ last After the wild fust heat the riders settled down to some' serious speedway ice racing. Although this event was an individual championship, the Canadian!American rivalry was extra intense as the Canadian riders seemed extra pumped to do well on their home ice. . Canadians Venables. Bill HiJland and John Dmytrow were all riding strong and scoring well. Likewise on the American side were John Lewis. Seth Church and Mark Borgman. Borgman was super suong in his five heat races. almost winning them all. He won four and on the last lap of his last heat he crashed and fell back. to last place. Borgman's 12 points was good enough to put him in the main though. As it turned out an intense last round heat race squeezed Dmytrow and Venables out of the main event point bubble, leaving Hilland alone to hold up the Canadian honors, with Americans Borgman, Lewis and Hilland filling out the .main event field. The main event turned out to be a super race to the end As Hilland, Borgman, Church and Lewis rock·
