Honda rider Aaron Hough had the second fastest grass track special test time on day two and ended up claiming the 125cc class victory. Seven-time ISOE gold medalist. jeff KOX200 to a fifth in the 250cc class. Kevin Hines rode his KTM to a second overall finish. Crashes during grass track and motocross special tests hurt his chances for the overall. AMA ISDE Reliability Qualifier Series: Round 1 Kadlec captures Texas Two-Day By Kit Palmer POST, TX, MAR. 21-22 Fritz Kadlec, 'the top American finisher at the 1986 International Six-Days Enduro, held in San Pellegrino, Italy, last September, returned in full strength and ,won the opening round of the 1987 ISDE Qualifier Series, despite I having ridden a motorcycle only a few times since the Six-Days. "We've had a long cold winter," said the Husqvarna rider from Colorado. "I haven't been able to ride hardly at ail, but I've been doing a lot of snowmobile racing." The two-day contest was pretty much a two-way battle for the overall between Kadlec and KTM's Kevin Hines. Neither Kadlec or Hines lost 'any route points on the 230·plusmile trail, so special test scores determined the bout between the two Malcolm Smith-sponsored riders. It was Kadlec who dominated the special test sections by having the fastest (lowest) terrain, grass track and motocross special test scores throughout the event. So when all the points were tallied, Kadlec beat Hines by 67 points, 3285-3352. Third overall went to Honda CR250 rider Kurt Hough; who collected 3370 points for the 250cc class win, edging Can-Am pilot Tony Hendon by 35 points, and Husky's Ed Lojak. In the I25cc class, Aaron Hough (Kurt's younger brother) ~ided his Honda CRl25 to the diVIsion win, finishing comfortably ahead of two other Honda riders, Scott Hodgenson and Ron Ribolzi. Husqvarnamounted John Haaker wrapped up the 500cc-and-up Four-Stroke class win after a tou~h shoot-out with fellow Husky nder John Bruckbauer. Tom Buckles captured third on his Husky. In the new lightweight 0-35Occ Four-Stroke class, it was Answer Products' Drew Smith on his Honda XR250 claiming the victory ahead of Billy Fulmer and Brian Mull. Because of the Honda ISDE Qualifier contingency pro~am, both Hough brothers and Srmth collected $500 each from Honda for winning their respective classes. Team Husky's Kadlec was the only rider in Texas who was a member of last year's U.S. Trophy Team in Italy, and he intends to ride the whole series. The rest of last year's Trophy Team, Larry Roeseler, Dave Bertram, Charles Halcomb, Chuck Miller and Geoff Ballard, did not compete and do not intend to qualify for the 1987 ISDE in Jelenia Cora, Poland, except for Roeseler and Bertram. Roeseler is reportedly working out a ride with Team Green Kawasaki for the rest of the series, while Bertram says he's going to ride the remaining three rounds on his 430cc Husky auto. The first day of the Texas qualifier featured 135 miles of trail and two grass track and terrain special test sections. Most of the loops consisted of more-or-less wide open trails with a few extremely tight sections over some hilly and bushy terrain. Flat tires (and rattlesnakes) were major concerns for the riders. Huge, spikelike thorns from the desert trees punctured many inner tubes throughout the event. Keytime was 8:01 a.m., and among the first row of starters was Aaron Hough, who rode last year's Qualifier series in the 250cc class. Just about all riders managed to start their motorcycles and leave the' start line within their minute. Husky-mounted John Nielson,. however, was one of the unlucky ones. "My bike didn't start on time, and I left II minutes late and was three minutes late to the first checkpoint." said Nielson, who competed In the Italian Six-Days but broke
