' Former Yamaha factory star Rex Staten made short work of the Open Pro class but it was in the Vet Expert race that Staten really had to work for the top honors. Grabbing the lead in both mows was Yamaha-mounted Mark White with Staten chasing from the number two slot in moto one before taking over the lead on lap three. Round two was a qifferent story when Staten tumbled on the start and remounted 20 seconds behind the leaders. It took five laps for Staten to move into second and close on White. The final three go-arounds featured the best action of the day as both riders dodged lappers, banged bars and set the day's fast lap times. On the final lap White and Staten cleared the camel-back jump side-byside, tangled on the following righthander and Staten emerged victorious as White tasted the turf. White was up quickly to hold on to the runner-up position. Staten took the overall win with White second ahead of Suzuki-mounted Alan Olson and a hard-charging Mark Brooks on a Honda Honda rider Paul Vlach and Yamaha ace Jimmy Lewis debated the 250cc Intermediate class outcome. with Vlach proving his point best. Lewis picked up second for the day as Yamaha rider Jim Kuntz placed third overall after Kawasaki pilot Craig Davis DNF the second molO. Incredibly the l25cc Intermediate race was a near replay with Vlach earning the overall win ahead of Lewis only this time the third place honors went to Kawasaki pilot Randy Danylo. Davis· put aside his 250cc Intermediate disappointment and charged back to win the Open Intermediate roost-off in commanding fashion. Honda rider Kevin Barda placed second ahead of David Bagwell also ,on a Honda. Honda rider Bengt Johansson upheld Sweden's honor by sweeping both motos of the Old Timer Expert class over Yamaha rider Steve Bussell and Honda-mounted Jody Weisel. In one of" the best l25cc Novice races ever witnessed at Perris Raceway, Honda riders David Dye and Jeff Fine battled Yamaha pilots Jeremy McGrath and Mark Easley in a ferocious second moto battle after first mow leader Mike Chamberlain dropped back.
