Dashing through the snow
C'mon you guysl Why print pictures like this (the lead photo in our
Husqvama 250cc Endw-o test article
in issue #9)?
Oviously this guy is not "on the
trail" is evidenced by the rut he left
through soft ground. This kind of
pictw-e gives the Sierra Club, Cranston, and all other "do gooders"
more ammo that cyclists are irresponsible regardless of the actual
circumstances of the shot_

Dear Dave Holeman
I read yow-column, How You Can
Win, and usually agree with yowpoint of view. This week's column,
"To whom it may concern," was
both brilliant and inspiring.
Do you ever wonder if you get
tlrrough to your readers, Dave? I
think the answer is yes, in most cases_
I'm a very busy man, but I do take
time to write to my elected officials
on matters I consider important. I
just fired off seven letters after
reading your column this week. That
took me an hour and 45 mmutes.

After writing my letters, I wondered. "What about Dave Holeman?" Seems Like you do plenty of
wOIk, but like most of us, never get
a pat on the back.
I just want you to know there are
people out there. like me, who share
your concerns and are doing what
we can. I hope to meet you some
day, Dave, so I can shake your hand.
Thanks.

Please allow me to point out an
apparent error in the Daytona Vintage race repon in yow- issue #10.
If the picture on page 45 is indeed
one of Beno Rodi then the name of
his machine in the photo caption
and in the race results should be
corrected to read BSA.
Although the rider's Jersey may say
Indian, the machine he is riding is
definitely a pIe-war BSA Gold Star,
the forerunner of a model that was
to achieve success in sports as varied
as observed trials and clubman's road
racing. in a way that can never be
equalled.

That is indeed Beno Rodi of Stone
Mountain, Georgia, in the picture
and that is indeed a BSA Gold Star,
a 1938 Gold Star. Rodi initially
entered the Pre-War class on an
Indian but switched to the Gold Star
at the last moment. He rode his
Indian to fourth place in the Pre1950 class at Daytona, plus he
finished sixth in the Sportsman 500
class aboard a BSA ... Editor.
Thrilled, but...
Touting my recent l25cc CMC
Golden State Nationals Championship, I was thrilled to be featured in
Cagiva North America's win ad
(issue. #9) and would like to thank
Cagiva for doin~ so in addition to
sponsoring me m the GSN with a
quality motorcycle. I do, however,
feel compelled to pay tribute to my
other sponsors, and point out a gross
misrepresentation of my use and
endorsement of products listed as a
tie-in with the Cagiva ad.
First, I won the GSN on Dunlop
tires and would like to thank Dunlop
and Allen Greenwood of KSI for
providing the best tires in all ground
conditions at all of the races. The
ad falsely states I used Metzeler tires.
It also implies that my teammates,
Mike Healey and A.J. Whiting, used
Metzeler tires which I know for a fact
they didn't - not one race, not even
one moto.
I'm so outra~ at the misleading
advertising which endorses products
which I do not use, that I have
consulted an attorney to determine .
what legal recourse is available to me
to get the record set straight.
I feel that inaccurate advertising
of this nature has done irreparable
harm to my creditabjlity and reputation with sponsors whom I have
worked so long and hard to cultivate.
In addition to Dunlop who's been
behind me 10Mi. I would like to
thank my other sponsors whose
support has been invaluable: Innovation Sports, Race Tech, O'Neal
Hi-Point Boots, Scott Goggles,
Renthal Handlebars and Specu-o
Oil.
Lastly. I would like to thank Paul
Thede who did a better job prepping
my Cagiva than any factory mechanic could do. His tireless effort
and attention to detail definitely
played the biggest part in clinching
my championship.
Once again, thanks to all of .my
legitimate spooson and I hope this
Jetter will set the record straight.

Missing round
I have been enjoying Cycle News
for over 10 yean. Your weekly
publication has always been my
source for getting the most recent and
accmate race results, for both local
and national races.
Lately, though, I have noticed that
Cycle News has made some errors in
regards to the 1987 National Hare
Scrambles Series. In the April 17,
issue that covered Daytona Cycle
Week. I kept searchin~ for the first
round results of the senes, and I was
shocked to see that you reponed the
Cocoa Beach, Florida, round as
being the first race of the series.
Several fellow racers and I made
a l2-hour drive to Shreveport, Louisiana, to attend the "real" fiIst round
of the series, and we all were anxiOU$ly waiting to see our names in
the Results sectiQn of Cycle News.
This was only my second haIe
scrambles National and you can
imagine my disappointment when
the race was never mentioned. I got
second in the l25cc B class and
another rider from St. Louis, Tim
Newell was seventh overall.
Maybe the club that put the race
on never sent in the results but I
think Cycle News ought to at least
mention that they made an error in
coverin~ the series.
DesPIte my complaint I still think
you put out a first rate publication
and I look forward to it every week.

The opening round of the 1987 AMA
National Championship Hare
Scrambles Series did indeed tau
place in Louisiana and the overall
winner was Can-Am's John Martin.
We ran an item on the event, listing
the top five overall finishers, in our
In The Wind section in issue #8, but
the expected comple~ race coverage
failed to materialize. We'll take full
blame for calling the Cocoa Beach
round, which Martin also won, the
opening round but will chalk that
mistake up to the annual rush to
pack coverage of all Daytona Cycle
Week races into that week's newspaper. Belated congratulations on
your fine performance in the Louisiana race . .. Editor.
Thanks,guys

work on each race, I want to thank
the above friends of desert racing for
their participation. Also, thanks to
Bill Saltzman for professional "graUs" wrenching on the bikes.
