front tire and a K391 RS Sport Elite at the rear said he had little trouble with his Dunlops. Moore picked up $1500 (or the WID. The AFM chose to combine the 250cc Grand Prix and ·the Open Stock Production classes, the battleground (or the big-bore GSXR Cup. The 250cc class favorites were the Phil Schilling-tuned Rotax o( Daniel Coe and the Yamaha TZ250mounted Cal Rayborn III, sponsored by Kenny Roberts and Nordica. Coe put in an excellent ride at Daytona a few weeks ago, running as hi~h as third place, 'when the vibrauon caused by an unbalanced set of cranks made the machine vibrate uncontrollably, dropping him to lOth at the race's end. Rayborn, who did well last year aboard a 500 Interceptor in club events in the area, finished (ifth in the 250cc GP class at Daytona and looks to be a strong contender for the overall 250 title at this year's Nationals. The Open Stock Production class would be the second wave off the line, and with both Moore and Polen lined up, things would certainly prove interesting. Moore was mounted on a brand new GSXRll 00 fitted with Pirelli Demons. Dennis Smith of Torrence Vance & Hines said the motor was directly out of the crate; the only attention it received was a post break-in oil and . filter change and a valve adjustment. Suspension components were bone stock as well, ~ccording to Smith. Both groups took a warm-up lap, but Coe had problems at the entrance to turn three and crashed, taking himself out of the race and handing first place to Rayborn. After another warm-up lap, Rayborn, starting in the front row, blasted of( the line, Dever looked back and won easily. James Henderson finished second· ahead of Thomas Dahl, all three were Yamaha-mounted. At the start of the 1100 race, Moore wheelied crazily while Polen got an excellent jump from the third row. Polen somehow got to turn one first with dirt tracker Mike Minning following closely behind. Moore was glued to Minning's rear tire as the trio started to put distance between themselves and fourth place. MinDing passed Polen (or the lead on lap two. Polen, wondering how hard he could push his tires but not wanting to repeat his 750cc class performance, decided to play it safe. "I wanted to make sure my tires were completely warm, and if they (Moore and Minning) got by, fine. I was totally willing to follow them around (or a while;" Moore's thinking' was this: "I fi~I'd follow him around, watch him, maybe find a weak spot. But he wasn't going real quick at the stan, and I decided to go by and let him chase me." Moore did go by Polen, and proceeded to pass Minning on the front straight on lap three; skillfully utilizing the draft. Polen passed Minning on the fourth go-round and was roughly one to two seconds behind Moore, who was turning low 1:32s. Polen was reconstructing his prerace strategy perfectly by the halfway point. It's become a Polen trademark to hold back until the last couple of laps and then use the draft to sting the leader on the final lap. On laps five, six and seven Polen inched closer and closer to Moore's Suzuki, and as the two streaked past the white flag, with less than half a second separatin~ them, everyone standing on the pit wall knew they'd see a' battle.• But Moore was ready.
