Mike Alexander won the 250cc Expert class on his Yamaha. swept past me bomb. Smith was pushing hard in second, just ahead of Eric Hallgath's I 25cc Yamaha and Team Honda's Randy Morales, riding a Honda 6OOR. Yamaha-mounted Mike Alexander had me lead in me 250 class (fifth overall) as the riders swept oui into me 39-mile first loop. He was just ahead of fellow 250 pilot Charlie Morris, Jr., who was riding a Suzuki. Mike Sixbery had his 250 Yamaha out in front of the Vet class in eighth overall, with Honda-mounted Ken Reiger gettin~ the jump on the Amateur field m II th overall. As me first loop headed oUt r.ast the Turtle Preserve towards California City, Smith started to make his move. ''I" got past Paul (Krause) about five miles after me bomb," Smith said. "It wasn't easy, eimer. The first loop was way too fast for me and I had big problems with my arms. They pumped up so bad and I was riding like a complete geek. Paul was right behind me me entire first loop and he must've been laughing at me the whole way." The fast-paced terrain of the California City area turned me entire first loop into a drag race. The racers were hard on the gas all me way and screamed out of the 39-mile loop in just over 40 minutes. "In the first loop Eric Hallgath, Paul Krause and I were so close it was like a giant motocross," said Morales. "We were side by side the whole way wim Dan Smith about 100 yards ahead of us. It was great." . Smim led the dash into the pits, but wim Krause, Morales and Hal19ath powering down pit row just 12 seconds behind, there was no time for District 37's number one Open class plate holder to rest on his laurels. Alexander still held the lead in the 250 class as he stormed out of "loop one in fifth overall, but wim a fellow 250 ace Charlie Morris only a few bike lengths back in sixth, Alexander hardly had time to catch his breath before launching his International Yamaha-sponsored machine out into loop two. . Recovering from a bad start to push his way through to ninth overall at the half-way point was Team Honda's Dan Ashcraft, who raced through just ahead of KTM rider Ed McCoy, Husky pilot Don Griewe, and ISDE ace Larry RoeseIer, who was riding a 250 Honda. Sixbery was still out in front of me Vets but had been pushed back to 15th overall, and Ken Rieger continued to dominate the Amateur division Just two places back in 17th. Loop two provided a complete change of pace from me rapid riding of the first loop.
