Carson SU YMEAD, CA, FEB. 22 Twenty-one riders signed up to do battle in the 125cc Beginner class at DeAnza Cycle Park, Sunday, and when the dust had sellled, it was Suzuki rider Wade Gatlin taking the gold. Gatlin did it after toping both motos despite serious threats by Kawasaki rider Joel Bellin and Honda-mounted Brian Beach. The start of the first moto saw the jam-packed field of riders squeeze into the first tum with Matt Melau and his Honda squirting inlO the lead. He was closely followed by Kris Tarbet, Steve Johnson and Gatlin. Soon after rounding the first turn, Gatlin was on the move, making his way up through the pack until he was in the lead. Bettin found his way into second just ahead of Tarbet and Honda rider Dave Espinoza. Espinoza was on the gas and passed Tarbet for third then set after Bettin. For the next three laps, Espinoza chased Bettin and finally found the hot line around the Kawasaki rider for second. Soon after, Espinoza was dogging leader Gatlin. With two laps lo go, Espinoza found his way into the lead, but Gatlin quickly retaliated. Gatlin managed to maintain his lead for one more lap before taking the victory. Espinoza finished second ahead of Bettin, Beach and Suzuki-mounted Victor unez. Round two, once again, saw Melatt capture the holeshot, but he was quickly taken over by Gatlin's Suzuki. Bettin snuck into second place by the second lap and chased Gatlin right down to the finish while Tarbet, Gary Butcher and Beach battled over third place. As they crossed the finish line, it was Gatlin leading the way for his second moto win of the day followed by Beach, Johnson and Melall. Another large turnout was featured in the 250cc Beginner class. Nineteen riders lined the starting gate in both mOlOS, but it was Darrell Roberts who dominated. Roberts rode his Honda to double moto victories for the overall, while Kevin Kelley (3-3), Mike Fanning (7-2), Rich Merrill (5-4) and Mark Hutchinson (6-6) rounded out the top five. • with this newest fine art print in the series "Famous Motorcycle Racing Memories" by artist Jeff Gundlach.
