The AMA and Anheuser-Busch Companies have announced their collaboration on a new program designed to increase motorcyclists' awareness about the importance of .. responsible alcohol consumption and responsible motorcycle riding. A brochure, Riding Straight: Alcohol Consumption and Motorcycle Safety, is planned for broad distribution and will represent the initial phase of the project. Three-time Supercross champ Bob Hannah will compete in the March 28-29 Seattle Supercross doubleheader. Hannah, who has opted to compete in very few stadium .Supercross even~ over the past few years, scored backto-back wins in the Seattle Kingdome in 19~3. Racing in the Kingdome will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 29. . Motorcycle D.ealers Association. ABC-TV's Wide World of Sports' will telecast the main event of the April 11 Ascot Half Mile, a round of the AMA Grand National Championship Series. Originally scheduled as a night race, the event will now take, place on Satl,Jrday afternoon with recing at Gardena, California's Ascot Park scheduled to start at noon with the 'main eveRt running at 2:40 p.m. due to the live telecast. It was also announced that the Ascot TT, scheduled for May 9, has been canceled, as has the Camel Pro Series Portland (Oregon) Road Race which was scheduled for August 22-23. A national network of volunteer trail riders to work in support of a strong conservation ethic and wise use of national forests was established 'March 3 under, a cooperative agreement signed between the AMA and the U.S. Forest Service in Washington DC. The signing represented the first such national agreement established by the Forest Service as part of the "Take Pride In America" program. Forest Service Chief F. Dale Robertson said he hopes the program will encourage the millions of off-road motorcyclists' in this country- to volunteer their assistance to enhance the more than 15,000 miles of trail open to motorized vehicles in the national forests. Interested motorcyclists should contact their nearest Forest Supervisor's office. Under the terms of the agreement, the volunteer trail riders would have no law enforcement .powers, but would assist forest service personnel to promote responsible use of natural resources and encourage safe and proper use of the land. They would act as conservation enhancement groups, assisting in trails management ·and other volunteer efforts throughout the national forest'system. There was significant· shuffling of the Daytona Castrol 250 Grand Prix road race results following a scoring review by AMA officials. The top seven positions were unchanged, but positions eight through 25 show startling differences. The race was won by Tea,m Maclean's Kork Ballington after Vance &. Hines rider Randy Renfrow ran out of gas on the final lap while in the lead. Renfrow was credited with eighth place in the Harley-Davidson has released a new, lower version of the XlH-883 Sportster. the Xl-883 Hugger. The Hugger:s seat height is 26. '15 inches. 1.75 inches lower than a standard Sportster's. The low seat height was accomplished by redesigning the rear suspension geometry and the seat. The suggested retail price for.the base (black) Xl-883 Hugger is $4199; California models are slightly higher. provisional results releued the day of the event, but was not included in the top 25 positions in the revised results. Darnell will conduct four schools in California starting with DeAnza on April 9-10, Ridgecrest on April 1112, Glen Helen on April 13-14 and Sand Hill Ranch on April 25-26. Darnell is also working on his masters degree in engineering with the subject of his thesis being track safety, . La Carrera organizer Cliff Carr says he~s received entries for the April 11 running of the Baja road race from two Marine Corps fighter pilots. Lt. Col. Lee logan and a friend will compete' on Kawasaki 250 Ninjas, according to Carr. In addition, Carr has announced that former National Championship Road, Race winners Ed and Gary Fisher will sponsor ;The Fisher Perpetual Centurion Trophy. Motocrosser Tim Hanna, who remains paralized fforp a back injury suffered at the Glen Helen round of the Golden State Nationals remains hospitalized at the' Sar:t Bernardino Community ·H'ospitaI. Hanna's mother, Bobbi, said that he is working very had to get out of the hospital and should be released in the next three to four weeks. The upcoming Honda Big Bucks Motocross Shootout at Raceway Park in Englishtown"New Jersey, is a two-day event, contrary to what the AMA American Motorcyclist magazine and other local district schedules show as a one-day race. The event will take place March 21-22, with trophy classes running qualifiers on S~turday and finals on Sunday. Pro classes will r.ide both motos on Sunday only.
