Loop two took the riders out through the Soggy Dry Lake area and made a loop back along the edge of . the Fry Mountains; throughout the 45 miles of fast-paced terrain, Krause and Ashcraft battled neck-in-neck for the lead. "We were together the whole way," Ashctaft said. "Every time we hit the tight stuff I would catch him, but when we got to the valleys he would get me every time. We went back and forth like thilt the whole time." "The rocks and the bumpy stuff ·were where things changed each time," said Krause. "He would get me in the rocks and I'd get him every time we hit the bumpy stuff. We just couldn't get away from each other." The battle continued right up to the checkered flag and as the riders came into view charging through the open desert, it was an impossible race to call.. A momentary hesi.tation by Ashcraft was all that it tool<, and Krause pushed his front wheel across the fimsh lin~ to take the overall honors. "I only just got him. We were cutting it a bit close," said a jubilant Krause. "We had a great race. I liked the first loop, bu t the second loop . was a bit fast. It went over my favorite trail through the rollers though, so I can't complain." . Third overall and first in the 250 class went to Husky pilot Dale Knapp, sponsored by Procircuitl Mitch Payton/Suzuki of Van Nuys, who rode most of the second loop without fifth and sixth gears. ''I'm so stoked to be up this high," said Knapp. "Missing those gears slowed me down a bit, but I loved the course. It was fast and twisty and it was marked excellent." Crossing the line in fourth overall was 250 Yamaha pilot Darin Cartwright, and coming on strong in the second loop to take fifth overall was Team Honda's Morales on a 600R, sp9nsored by American· Honda/ Answer/Scott/Shoei. "It was a fun course," said Morales. "I panicked on the start. These 600s will start first kick every time if you kick them right, but I messed it up and got a bad start." Eddie Ogden brought his 250 Yamaha home in six.th overall and • seventh overall went to Ron Shuler of the Rovers M.e. on an Open class Yamaha. The first 125cc bike, a Yamaha piloted by Eric Hallgath, finished in eighth. Second in the 125 class went to Yamaha pilot John Braasch, who &K Of~, r .
