Same great show both days Schwartz stars at Spring Classic opener By Scott Daloisio LONG BEACH, CA, MAR. 7 Defending National Speedway Champion Bobby Schwartz defeated a star-studded field to take home the gold in the Coca-Cola Spring Clas'sic at Veteran's Stadium. The only two riders who defeated Schwartz in the qualifiers were Brad Oxley and Rick Miller, but Schwartz was able to avenge those lo~s with an impressive ride in the maln. The program got of[ to a rocky start when the starting gate malfunctioned in event one. The start of event two proved no better as "Showtime" Bobby Ott got out of shape in turn one on lap one. That forced John Cook to take evasive action to miss Ott. Cook blasted the turn one fence and managed to slide under it. That put Cook out for the night with what was first thought of as a broken right hand. He was happy to find out the next morning that it was only a dislocated knuckle. On the second try to run event two, witliout Cook and Ott, it was all Schwartz as he held off the determined charges of GM riding John Sandona. Shawn McConnell grabbed the gate in event three but watched as Miller rode around him on the back chute on the first circuit for the lead and eventuai victory. McConnell dropped out at the end' of the lap with apparent clutch problems. Lance King ran away for the win in event four with ice racing specialist Scotty Brown passing Denny Scopellite on the final go'roui'!d [or second. On the rerun of event one it was all Shawn Moran over Brad Oxley and "Flyin' Mike" Faria. Miller started round two with another immaculate victory while Oxley, who is not known as a big IlluVE~" -- IIzr fI.fj • ~TIbe ~E~~ . ~ Pierremont Plaza-Race HQ •••••••••••••••••••••••• ORDER NOW FOR BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSEl eN _11 SAve $2 on $15l1ckets through mall order only.
