Voices· (Continued from page 4/ public input. Should 'these factors prove promising, the DPR will proceed with an environmental impact report, public hearings, and prepare a final report. Once that point is reached, it is conceivable that an ORV facility could become a reality by early 1988. In the first public meeting held March 7, approximately 60 people attended a presentation sponsored by the DPR and roughly half of those attending made comment. At the public meeting a consulting team consisting of an environmental planner, an ORV specialist (Victor Wilson, former owner of Saddleback Park), and Dorthea Park of the DPR presented a well organized and informative overview of the proposed park. Comments were then invited from the public, most of whom were opposed to the project and emotionally out of control. Six persons made comments supporting the project, including Dick Allen, a local motorcycle shop owner, and several riders. The next public meeting will be held sometime in April. However, comments and support concerning the proposed site and requests to be p4tced on the mailing list should be addressed and mailed now to: Ms. Dorthea Park, Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, 433 South Vermont, Los Angeles, CA . • THUNDER 5DAYTDNA RII;ne, .,s lonl;lIIIe liS Kerker eqUipped H"""" stonnsto v;doryl Kerker congratulates Wayne Rainey, Team Manager Gary Mathers, .Mechanic Sparky Edmonston and Tuner Rob Muzzy on a super speedweek. 1st place: Inaugural Camel Challenge Race - 110.9 MPH! 1st place: Daytona 200 - fastest win in history~ Watch as Team Honda and Kerker thunder through the rest of the Camel Pro Season. 90020. Opposition to the project is present, however, and it is obvious that the DPR has spent a great deal of time and money in an effort to create a partial solution to the lack of ORV facilities. If enough public support is voiced, it appears that an ORV park in the Canyon Country area will become a reality. Ms. Park emphasized the need for support in the form of letters if the project is to succeed. MARVE ADAMS' Chatsworth, CA Senator Cranston: I am writing to express my opposition to the California Desert Protection Act, 1987, Senate Bill S-7. Denying access to vast areas of our state to those of us who enjoy using these areas for camping, sight-seeing and for off-road vehicle use strikes me as a stop-gap overly simplistic solution with potentially far reaching implica~ons. My concern is not strictly limited to'S-7, but to all regulation that smacks of having "Big Brother" government demonstrate its concern for the welfare of the people by interfering in our everyday lives through enactment of legislation that discriminates against the same people it purports to represent. If use of public lands within the State of California is a genuine concern, I suggest it might be better if you let the people of the state and state government make the decisions concerning that usage. I see no need for the Senate of the United States to concern itself with such matters. Please represent the people of California in the matters for which you were elected, those matters of national and international import that will preserve the republic and insure that there are future generations who can use the land.
