Tysor's Honda led the second wave ~nto turn one, then carved its way through traffic and into the rop 10 by the end of the first lap. Stevens had the lead by lap two and was fending off challenges from Jacks, Griffith and Orlando. Polen, sponsor.ed by Texas Hyperformance/Dunlop/ AGV /RK/EBC, was pushing hard through the infield in fifth place, pu tting . distance between himself and Scott Russell, Ken Stephens and Colorado's Dan Walker. Midway through lap three, Polen had moved into second and was putting pressure on Stev~ns. He outbraked Stevens going into turn one on the fourth lap and began to slowly pul1 away from the field. Orlando was running unchallenged in third, 'while Griffith held down fourth. At the halfway point, Polen was still feeling pressure fI:om Stevens, who had a three-second lead on Orlando. Griffith was al1 alone in fourth, while Tysor took over fifth by moving around a battle between Hurricane-mounted Russell and Walker. Moving rapidly through the pack, making up for starting positions from deep within the second-wave grid, were Keith Pinkstaff and Ron Ewarth, who started on row 13, Lance Jones, who started on row I4 and Larry O'Brian, who started on row 15. By the midway poinvPinkstaff was running ninth, O'Brian was in lOth, Ewerth was holding down II th and Jones was running 12th. Polen, who had been turning consistent lap times in the twominute, 6.8-second range, was four seconds in front of Stevens on lap eight, and Stevens held a five-second edge over the third-place battle 'between Orlando and Continental/ Shoei/KaI-GardiEBC/Kerker/DynoJet-sponsored Tysor. Griffith was all alone in fifth, leaving Walker, Russell, Pinkstaff and O'Brian to argue over sixth. Jones, who was running 10th, was just holding off Stephens and Ewarth. Tysor took control of third place on the white flag-lap when Orlando pit€hed away the Cycles of Boulder Hurricane coming off of the front straight, into turn one. Neither motorcycle nor rider were seriously injured. . "We had a gearbox problem," said Orlando. "I shifted into a false nc;utral while downshifting for turn - ,one and that put me in way too hot I real1y crashed five times, only I saved it four times. I locked up the front wheel three times when I went off into the grass. The wall was coming up quick so I flicked it down." Orlando rejoined the race and finished in 12th position, on the same lap as the leader. At the flag, Polen was pulling away from Stevens, while Tysor was slowly reeling in the Honda rider from Florida. Near the end of the race, Georgia's Tysor turned in laps in the two-minute, seven second range, but he had to settle for third when he ran out of race. Rounding out the top 10 were Griffith, Walker, Russell, Pinkstaff, Jones, O'Brien and Ewarth. Stephens took II th, finishing in front' of Orlando. Polen, who captured third in the Daytona 200 Superbike feature race March 8 aboard a Kosar Racing Suzuki GSXR750, tried to get off to a quick start in Supers port competition. "I tried to pass as many people as I-could before turn one, then ease my way through the turn," he said. '''1 just tried to stay out of trouble whil~ moving up. I spent the .last six laps just making sure he (Stevens) was still behind me and trying to stay out of trouble." "He got me going into turn one," said Stevens. "He just sort of reeled me in." Tysor, who was WERA's 1986 600cc Production National Champion, was happy with third place, but feels he could have captured second had the scheduled 15-lap race not been shortened to 10 laps because of a rain delay. "1 don't think I would have caught Doug (Polen), but if the race would have been scheduled for 15 laps, a second would have been for sure," he said. "According to the lap times, if the race had gone the full 15 laps we would have finished second. Stevens started on the first row. I started in the second wave and there were 50 riders· in front of me. That's a lot to make up.
