Okay, well, helmets are a good thing, .
but does that mean they have to be
mandated? How good of a thing are
they, iftaken to that extreme? Inquiring minds wanted to know.
As a reporter you investigate these
questions. The who-what-when are
clear enough, but the why keeps
changing. Why us? you would ask.
At first the bureaucrats answered, "It
is for your own good, trust us. We are
here to help you." The politicians
answered, "Because the D.O.T. says
we must or they will stop payment of
billion$ of federal rebate$ to the
$tate$."
So millions of helmets were sold
and it began to look like hard hats
were coming into s.tyle politically as
well, but then you got the bad news:
Motorcycle accident and death rates
were still climbing. Especially in the
states that had enacted helmet laws!
Why?
The bureaucrats admitted, of£ the
record, "Motorcyclists are small fry,
but you were chosen to set a precedent for other, bigger mandatory legislation that we have in mind." The
politicians then were upset with long
hair on draftable young men (the war
was going badly) and many were

Sure.
Would that it were all true. They
can force a man not to ride the motorcycle, but they cannot make him wear
the bonnet. If he doesn't know the
benefit of a helmet already, how is a
law like that going to protect him?
Ohh, now you get it ... protecting
the poor biker is not the purpose of
the law, or even selling more helmets.
You can defeat the arguments two by
two but they are just blue smoke and
mirrors to conceal what is really
gomg on.
Clearly motorcyclists are at risk in
our society, but just as plainly, hel met
laws are not what they claim. The
helmet law can only rid the strui ofcertain kinds of bikers. You have a
hunch that is the real reason for
pressing this discredited law on the
citizens of the state. Can you believe
