When the green flag signaled the start of the race, American Team Leoni rider James Adamo nabbed the holeshot and was followed inLO the first turn by Church, Harleymounted Malcolme Tunstall and Lucchinelli. Church took the lead briefly, but Lucchinelli inherited the top spot when Church crashed. By the third lap, Lucchinelli was setting the pace for Caracchi and Adamo, Tunstall followed in fourth, and Parker bauled for fifth with fellow Harley rider Roger Reiman. . Dr. David Kieffer, who was running eighth on the same lap, became a victim of the oil slick while exiting the infield and racing LOward the banking. When Kieffer hit the oil, both tires slid out from under him, sending the Rough Stock Racing rider tumbling across the course. Fortunately, he was not injured seriously. Parker took over third on the sixth and final lap when Adamo went straight through the chicane, then was forced to pull off the track when a bolt broke on an oil line on his Ducati. Reiman finished fourth and Tunstall rounded out the top five. Parker nearly went down on the last lap in the same spot where Kieffer tumbled. When he hit the oil slick, his Harley went into a full-lock slide that slammed the fork so hard against its SLOp that a portion of the fairing windscreen broke away. The Pro Twins Modified Production race was won by defending class champion Douglas Gross, who was also mounted on a Ducati. The Modified race, like the GP final, was shortened because of the weather. That made the race a 10lap sprint where strategy played a less important role than it would have during a regular 15-lap final. It meant all-out racing for the riders who wanted to win, and that's exactly how Gross had to perform because Cagiva pilot Peter Johnson grabbed the holeshot and tried to run away with the race. Johnson jumped out to a 4.1second lead by the end of the first lap, setting the pace for Berl Stuckert's BMW and Gross's Ducati. Gross moved into second by' the third lap, but was still four seconds behind the Cagiva. Gross closed that gap to 3.8 seconds by lap four, then closed it to less than one second by lap five. He passed Johnson on' the Back straight to take the lead on lap six. By lap seven Gross had. opened a comfortable two second lead over Johnson, while Richard Mass and James Hollingsworth trailed in third and fourth, followed .by John SUipleton in fifth, Ronald Barton in sixth, Gerald DeMou in seventh and Madison Cox in eighth. By the time the checkered flag fell on lap 10, Mass had moved into third behind Gross and Johnson, while BarLOn 's Ducati was running fourth and Hollingsworth's Harley was circulating in fifth. • Results GP: 1.
