Barona MX wins

The 1987 season got underway
Sunday at Barona Oaks Motocross. The racers were greeted
with a new track that included
many new turns, SLraights, and even a
section of stadium-type whoops. Today's big winner was birthday-boy
David Germain, who won all the
classes he entered.
In the 125cc Open class Ronnie
Kauble grabbed the holeshot with
Germain and Paul Garthwaite in
tow. Shortly after that, Garthwaite
went by Germain and inLO second,
but Germain passed Garthwaite and
the leader, Kauble. As the race progressed, a ballie developed for third
place between Garthwaiteand Yamaha rider Todd MiteheJl. The two riders
were gl ued together until the sixth
lap when Garthwaite [ell and Mitchell went by. The finishing order
was Germain, Kauble, Mitchell, and
Garthwaite.
The second moLO had Tony Pierano taking the holeshot with Kauble
and Germain close behind. Through
the first twO turns Kaubl.e was able to
pass Pierano and open up a small
lead. Germain was next around Pierano and was closing quickly on
Kauble. Kauble's lead didn't last long
as Germain went by to take the overall win w' th a large lead.
The 125cc Novice Stock class was
also one to watch for action, as the
riders were very c10sel y matched. The
first moLO saw Jeremy Tooken pull
the holeshot and take an early lead
aboard his Honda. Ed Hatcher, Robert
Gustine, and Danny Sullivan all battled [or second. As Tooken secured
his lead, Kory Byers joined the battl.e
behind by passing Walsh for fourth
place. The order was the same until
Hatcher crashed on the last lap, moving the other riders up one notch.
The second moto began with Tooken
taking the holeshot with Byers hot on
his heels. The two J"iders diced
througho~t the moto, with Tooken
faster through the corners and Byers
faster in the whoops. Two laps from
the finish Byers used his advantage in
the whoops, passing Tooken and he
soon pulled out to a small lead and
held it to the finish. Tooken took the
overall honors with Byers second.
