In this grand Prix al LACR, lhe
Pros were in the same race with lhe
Intermediates, three classes of each.
Th~ SOOccs Slarled firsl, lhen lhe 2S05,
th'en the 12Ss. When lhe firsl flag fell,
Open Pro Brad McLeod was way OUl
in fronl allhe firsllurn, followed by
Eric Marnoch and John Hemme. Pro
Rod Richardson led lhe 2S0cc starl
and Hicks was the quickest 12Scc
rider.
Al lhe end of lap one, Hicks had
already passed alllhe 2SOcc Intermediales and was closing on the 2SOcc
Pros. Hicks began sleadily nibbling
away al lhose, moving up several
places with each lap. By lap three,
only McLeod was ahead of him.
As they came OUl of the deserl porlion of lhe Grand Prix uack and
entered the mOlocross section, Hicks
was righl on McLeod's tail and ready
lO make his move. He picked the
roughesl part of the track lO do il, and
ended up sliding sideways and 10Sl
three seconds. He made lhal up in lhe
neXl 200 yards and flashed into the
lead right al lhe beginning of me
SiXlh lap. The race was barely IS
minules old Wilh 30 slill lO go.
. Hicks won easily, by some 30 seconds over second place. Richardson
slayed on lOp of lhe 2SOcc Pros for
firsl place money and McLeOd easily
won the Open Pro class.
Mike Sullivan was firsl Novice off
the line as lhe £lag fell for lhe Open
row Slarl Wilh Dee Way close behind.
Way gOl even closer by the end of lap
lWO and took the lead in lap three.
FOrly-five minules is a long race and
Way DNF aboul midrace, giving the
lead back lO Sullivan, who held il for
lhe win.
It was a reverse scripl in lhe 2SOcc
wave, as Jimmy Kighl gOl the holeShOl, chase
