Jones topped Darell Davis and Scott Adams in the main event. Kirk Strong beat Steve Aseltine in the second heat with Sammy Sweet in third from the second lap to the end. Davis cruised to the third semi win with Brian Bonesteel holding onto second after hitting the wall on the fifth lap and Pete Hames just four bike lengths back. The fourth semi was red-£lagged [or a bad start with Carr taking the holeshot in the second start. Although his factory Harley began blubbering on the seventh lap, Carr held on to beat Tim Mertens with Ted Boody third. When the green light flashed on for the 12-lap main, Jones was off and running with .Mertens, Davis, Adams anc;l Sweet following. Strong was down and out with a first lap, second tum crash into the hay bales.. Davis made a rare Memorial Sta- dium pass on the second lap moving MertenS back to third. Adams was right on Mertens with Sweet still fifth and Aseltine fighting Pete Hames for sixth. Boody lid out in turn one on the fourth lap, but re-mounted at the rear of the pack. Adams moved past Mertens at the halfway mark and three laps later lost another spot to weet. On the ninth lap A eltinegottheworstofhi battle with Hames and wentlnto the firstturn hay bales. He protested vehemently to referee Freddie Ephrem, but to no avail. On the lOth lap Jones looked back to see Davis catching up, but was able to hold him 0[[ for a 10-yard win. Davi was at least 50 yards ahead o[ th ird-place Adams who was comfortably in front of Sweet. Sweet had passed Mertens on the 10th lap. Hames was sixth. Adams, on the Team Pacesetters! Pyle Tool Co.! Altizer Tool Co. Honda said that he was trying too hard in the beginning and-had to settle down. He also said that gearing change on his Fred Devrick-tuned bike was the difference in the main. "We went one tooth lower on the rear in the semi becau e we put a wider rear tire on," Adams said. "It wasn't hooking up too good until 1 went up top. 1 knew we'd either win it or lose it on the top so I better get up there." Davis, who'd won the Junior milin the previous night, said that there was more of a groove on the second night of racing and more traction. "I could ride wider than last night. Adams made one bobble and tha twas it. But I couldn't get around Jones," the Cliff's Cycle Center-sponsored ride.r said. "It's always the same," the veteran Jones said. "I thought I had a big lead and then somebody was out there waving me on. I looked back on about the lOth lap and saw him there. Asked whether he was thinking of repeating as series champion he said, "Worrying about the top prize is a waste of time. I wasn't thinking about it a couple of years ago and I went out and won all three races. I'll just try to do the same thing tomorrow night. ".
