Farris moved into second on the third lap as Poovey strengthened his lead and Boody worked past Mertens. At the halfway point Poovey was about 15 yards in front of Farris with Boody closing on Atherton. Mertens and Estep were ballling closely 30. yards back with Estep taking the advantage late in the race. On the eighth lap Poovey hit a bump and was bounced out of his seat giving Farris the opening he needed. A lap earlier Boody had moved past Atherton for third. When the checkered flag fell Farris had about a 10-yard lead on Poovey with Boody closing and Atherton comfortably ahead of Estep. Mertens held on for sixth. . "I had a bad start and ran out of laps," Boody explained. The College Bike Shop/Fox/Arai/Megacyclesponsored Boody said that today's track was better than the previous day's because "you could ride in more places. I could see where they were having smooth laps. I was gaining. Two more laps and I would've won. No problem. These Hondas are Harleys." "I got into a wobble in turn three about halfway through the race and Boody got by right after that," said Atherton. "Once I calmed down I . started moving back up. I thought if I got out of the hole okay I could run with them. I wanted to make them pass me. I knew from practice and the heats that Rodney was the one to beat." Atherton added that his father Dave, "a racer from the '60s," does'all the wrenching on his Harley which is sponsored by Perry's Harley-Davidson, Carlisle, Arai, Tsubaki, and Nonhern Electric. "This is his cup of tea," runner-up Poovey said of the winner. "He likes this kind of track and I like it when the groove is -about this wide," he said, holding his hands a foot apart. Besides Shoei, Hap Jones, Hi-Point, and Castrol contribute to Poovey's racing effon. When it came time to mention who helps him out, Farris gave a long liSt of well-known racing names. "Ed and Gary Fisher, Gary Nixon, Mike Sponseller, and my friend Mike Wheeler. I'd also like to thank Jim France for putting on the race and all the fans." The crowd was estimated by the promoters at a bout 4000 people. "I was running it high on top then I staned slingshotting coming off low in the third turn," Farris said.
