Wiseco/Spectro Daytona Dirt Track Series: Round 3 Morehead tops Barberville HM By Dave Hoenig Photos by Flat Trak Fotos BARBERVILLE, FL, FEB. 28 The Daytona Dirt Track Series moved to Barberville's Volusia County Speedway aft~r the previous night's round at Jacksonville was postponed due to rain. Steve Morehead picked up where he left off at I Tampa and took his Tex Peel- son/SlOrz/john Dragoo-sponsored Harley-Davidson XR750 lO a wire-towire win in the Expert main. Brian Villella also continued his winning ways by nipping Steve Aseltine for the junior win. Virginia's Todd Kendig held off Dave Reeves for the Pro-Am win. With 69 Experts on hand, competition was fierce for the 36 qualifying spots. Texan Sammy Sweet turned the quickest lap at 20.848. The 51 Novices were put into six scratch heats with wins going lO joe Bromley, jay Skidmore, Kenny Dahlin, Michael Rusd~n, Dave Camlin and Todd Kendig. Kendig's was the fastest heat. Fifty-three juniors filled six scratch heats with Darrell Davis, Brian Caron, jeff jones, Erik Graybeal, Steve Aseltine and Scott Stump taking wins with Davis winning the quickest race. Kendig backed up his scratch heat win by running away with the first regular Pro-Am heat. Rich Foard moved past Mike Rusden for second. Camlin charged past Mike Butler to win the second heat. Skidmore also got by for second with Butler holding on for third. The first junior heat saw Davis and Aseltine hook up in a dandy race with Davis edging Aseltine at the line. jim Harrell led Don Martin home in third. The secol'ld junior heat belonged to Kris Kiser'but Villella was closing late in the race. Graybeal and Stump fought over third with Graybeal edging Stump out at the line. The standard Barberville program was in use for the Experts with four nine-rider heats with everyone moving into three finals. The first heat saw pole sitter Sweet move by early leader Pete Hames and then tow Hames and Scott Adams into the A main. . Terry Poovey ran away with heat two, as Rusty Rogers and Billy Herndon ran second and third. Brian Athenon used an outstanding holeshot to capture the third heat in a close finish over Ted Boody. Rod Farris finished third. Morehead held off the early chal- lenges of George Roeder then jon CornwelllO take the last heat. Roeder took third behind Morehead and Cornwell. Kendig pushed his seH-sponsored Rotax lO the front of the Pro-Am final and appeared to be running away when David Reeves began closing, but time ran out and Kendig came away with the win. Skidmore took third while Butler slipped by Gafl.llin with two laps left for fourth. When Villella and his Ron Wood! MX Racing/Shoei/Cam 2/Tsubakisponsored Wood-Rotax took the lead away from Davis in the junior main it looked like another win for the Michigan rider but a red flag was waved on lap five. Aseltine moved from third to first on the restart but Villella pulled it out with a last lap pass. Aseltine led Davis and Stump home. In the Expert A main, pole-sitter Atherton got as terrible a start as Morehead did a good one and the race . belong to the "Findlay Flyer," his third straight in the series. Boody settled into second for good. Terry Poovey ran third until lap seven when he dropped out with mechanical problems. Farris took over third with Atherton moving up to fourth.
