"If Congress is going to change
direction every 10 years, how can we
insure the kind of long-term protection which the California Desert so
richly and rightly deserves?" asked
Burford.
"These legislative proposals would
put aside the multiple-use mandate
of just a decade ago, carving up the
desert into separate, distinct, and unrelated areas," Burford said.
While discussing the rationale for
the new proposals, Burford pointed
out that the sponsors of Cranston's
bill clearly admit that the mea ure
would, "implement conservationist
propo als."
