As the field completed the first five
laps, Rentzell had the Kayo Racing
GSXR in 15th place and on the move.
On the next lap Shorts began to experience difficulty with his Suzuki and
gradually began to drop from contention. By lap 12 the team wasoutof
the race.
"It just lost its spark, we think it
might have been the coil," said Lockhart's crew chief Keith Perry. As
Lockhart dropped out of the lead,
Rentzell had the Kayo GSXR in the
lead with High Tech Racing running second and the S&:L Enterprises
GSXRIIOO of Larry Scholl, Robbie
Scholl and Kamran Pakyab third.
Ewerth and Harth had moved the
Cycle J>ro Suzuki into the 14th position and were slowly picking off riders as they moved to the front. West
Florida Racing continued to lead
GTU with J&:J Racing second while
thi'rd in GTU continued to be the
EMHO Raang/Hoeppner Hauling/
Dublin Kawasaki Ninja 600 of brothers Jeff, Dick and Kirk Hoeppner.
Fourth was the Jam-Up Racing II
FZ600 of Bob Rentzell and AHan
Mueller and fifth in GTU was the
Lofgren Racing Yamaha FZ600 of
Ian Nicholson and Guy Hiney.
Lap 16 had the S&:L Enterprise
entry drop to fourth with the Team
Hyper-Cycle Suzuki GSXRllOO of
Jeff Herzog and Carry Andrew moving into third. The Miami Vice Racing/Speed &: Sport Cycle GSXRIIOO
of Thomas Stevens and Steve Tedler
was on the move and took over third
by lap 21. Kayo Racing's charge
slowed on lap 25 when Rentzell ran
Qut of gas in the infield. Many of the
teams had begun to have fuel problems with several saying they were
not getting as good of mileage as they
had in the October race. High Tech
Racing now moved back in front
Three lapslater Second City moved
into second as Cycle Pro euta full lap
on the field. The next lap the standings shurned again with High Tech
Racing moving hack to second, Miami
Vice third and Second City dropped
to fourth. Deano Swims was now on
the Kayo Racing Suzuki and moving
the bike back to the front, rurtning
11th and on the gas.
As the race headed into the final
laps, Second City Racing, High Tech
~acing, Miami Vice and Zlock Racing continued to swap positions. Most
of the teams would have to make at
least one more fuel stop and brakes
were now becoming a concern with
the teams as the high speeds at Daytona focused heavy brake pad wear.
Lap 53 had Miami Vice move back
to second with RentzeU now out on
the Kayo Racing Suzuki, taking over
fourth a lap down on the leaders.
Miami Vice had worked their way
back on the lead lap with Cycle Pro.
By lap 63 High Tech ran third and
also moved on the lead lap. The Jam
Up II Racing FZ600 had taken over
the GTU lead.
High Tech Racing had been suffering fuel problems the entire day
and the riding of J uerink and Sadowski
was the only thing that kept the tearn
in the running. "Something's wrong
with our fuel valve," Juerink said.
"We've run out of gas three times, it
seems like it's getting worse every
time we pit. We're getting less mileage
every time." On lap 68, High Tech
pitted to work on the valve, dropping
them to fifth and moving Kayo into
third.
Cycle Pro was going to take a
chance and try and finish the race
without another fuel stop. "This may
be the-Geoff Bodine pits here in a
minute, we're gonna go for it,"'Fasola said. "If Mike goes on reserve
we'll have to pit."
Trouble contiDued to haunt the
Kayo entry and with a sure third
place in the hag, Rentzell had trouble
on the last lap when his throttle
stuck, dropping them to a sixth place
finish. At the checker it was Cycle
Pro making their fuel gamble pay
off. "We lost our brakes at the star,t of
the race. ( was having to really shut
off early and that was tough," said
Harth.
"We didn't have much practice
and we lost the brakes around the
55th lap. I was trying to pick things
up to catch them, butjustdidn't have
the brakes," said Miami Vice Racing's Thomas Stevens.
"My throttle stuck open going into
the international horseshoe on the
last lap," said Kayo's Rentzell.
Cycle Pro covered the 250 miles in
two hours 39 minutes for their first
endurance win of the season. Following Cycle Pro and Miami Vice was
the third place Team Safari Suzuki
GSXRIlOO of John Long and Steve
Guanche with fourth going to High
Tech Racing. Taking fifth overall
was Second City Racing.
Jam Up Racing II took the GTU
win. "We ran low on oil on our
second stop and started losing power,"
said Rentzell. Following Jam Up II
was Out &: Out Racing and third in
GTU was the Hornett Racing Yamaha FZ600 for Bill Hornblower and
Tom Douglas.
