AMA National Championship Arenacross Series: Rounds 1-2 Andrews sweeps Cincinnati By Davey Combs CINCINNATI, OH, FEB. 14-15 Honda Support rider Fred Andrews completely dominated the opening rounds of the '87 Arenacross series, winning both Saturday and Sunday's races in the Cincinnati Gardens. I . h Wmter AM Senes tIt ~ m t e 125cc Pro class, combmed aggressive riding and good starts to score a pair of 125cc Expert class wins over Mark Musselman and Mike J ones. The indoor openers also hosted a full card of Amateur and Youth c1asses, drawing nearly 800 riders to Cincinnati. Andrews opened up strong on Saturday, pulling down.a qualifier win over Musselman. West Virginia's Mike Bias, Kemucky's Billy Abel, and New Jersey's Brian Carroll, all Arenacross regulars, also captured heat race wins. The big news, though, was that John Grewe, local hero T~oy Graham, Cagiva-su,Pported Mike Jones, Gear-backed Bnan Stanley, and Michigan's top gun, Todd DeHoop, all failed to make the main out of the fiercely competitive heat races. And once the consolation races were run, only Jones and Graham advanced. Musselman took the lead in the final, rounding turn one ahead of Jones and Graham, with Abel, Cliff Walker and Andrews following. One by one, Andrews began moving by the leaders. Finally, on lap seven, Andrews threw one of his notorious inside-out moves on Musselman in a fast sweeper and placed himself in first. He was followed across the finish line by Musselman, Jones, Abel, arid first turn crasher Bias. Sunday's final was more of the same, only Andrews nailed down the .start from the far inside and took it all lhe way home. Jones kept him honest and finished second with Graham, Bias, and Carroll rounding out the lOp five. Brian Swink was the pre-race Mini class favorite coming imo the Gardens on his Team Green KX, but when the Saturday final wrapped up it was PJ IIScon/MJ USA/Beechmont Yamaha-backed Bryan Smilh in lhe winner's circle. Smith has had a rollercoasler ride lhese pasl few seasons afLer dominating the 60cc class, but al Cincy he showed speed many people had forgol he had. On Sunday, though, he senled for third as Swink pUt it all togelher lO score the win over Eric McClear. JiJstin J arren and Louis Lorenz wem 4-5. The 125 and 250cc B classes. were aclion-packed a'll' weekend long. Slevie Childress may have had a problem with the crack, but he showed no doubt as to who the top 125cc Amateur was. Childress grabbed bolh wins, besting Greg Wheeler and John Lewis on Saturday night, then coming back to beal Bill Hamilton and Chuck Reed in the Sunday finale. Saturday's B class lineup fealured a full card, so a second final was run for the LOp non-qualifiers. Dave Beckinglon lopped Scon Darnold and Canadian Bill Hamilton in that race. Childress found the going a bit tougher in the 250cc ranks. Rod Carrier piloted his Suzuki LO the Saturday win over Lewis and George Molnar, Wheeler, and Childress. Lewis finally copped a win in the Sunday 250cc final afler going 7-3-2 in his other three Intermediate finals, besling Dan Boivin, Childress, Wheeler, and John Gorman. Jamie HOrlon was the class of lhe l25cc Beginners, going 1-1 for lhe weekend on his Honda. He was followed by Donald Volkman and Shad Walker on Saturday then beal Amhony Newman and Michigan's Volkman in the next day's action. Volkman rebounded with a pair of impressive 250cc C wins. The Honda rider led Kevin van Arsedale and Jerry Kenerva across the line in the opener, lhen lOPped Kenerva and Shawn Scon on Sunday. The Open B/C class saw several differem fromrunners, but in the end it was KTM-moumed MilCh KelJer and Yamaha pilol Rick Oxley holding lhe firsl place lrophies. Keller was followed by Todd White and Slephen Pedley, while Oxley topped D. Scon Bishop and Don Revels Jr. in the afLernoon race. Eric Arlet dominaled the 85cc (1013) race. The Honda racer pulled imo the lead on the first lap and was all clear after early contender Justin Jarrell ran into lrouble and dropped back LO fifLh. Jeff Curry, Joshua Brown, and Chris Pomeroy provided the cushion, running 2-3-4. Kerie Fleenor hammered the 65cc class. besting Gregory Rand and Jesse Thumser. The Pee Wee class was a "Torpedo Joe" runaway. Joey Belmom stomped LO the win over Joey Ballinger and Jesse Atkinson. . . The Plus 25 class was a LOSS-Up all weekend long. Jeff Steinrock was tOpS on Salurday, bringing home the win in from of Vern Zweifel and Don Lewis.
