Brian McElroy (Hon) lOpped the I 25cc SemiPro class, Mike LaRocco (Yam) was the winner in the 250cc Semi-Pro class, and Doug Hoover (Hon) was first in the Open Semi-Pro class. McElroy was the series champ in the 125cc division, Hoover in the 250cc class, and Scooter Staf£ord (Yam) in the Open division. HIRED: Jeff Gehrs, by Richter Performance Systems of Long Beach, California, as marketing director; Gehrs was formerly with Van Leeuwen Distributing. Las Vegas, evada's Sam Boyd Silverbowl will host stadium motocross racing on Saturday, March 14. Amateur class competitors will race during the day; the evelling racing will feature 125 and 250cc Pro competition with a $5000 purse. Jacksonville's JIIJ( Raceway will be the site for Friday night's action, while Saturday night and Sunday afternoon racing will take place at Barberville's Volusia County Speedway. Steve Morehead, who won the first two rounds of the series in Tampa will have the likes of fourth ranked Camel Pro Series racer Chris Carr, sixth ranked Ronnie Jones and seventh ranked Ted Boody to contend with. Boody will be out to repeat as winner of the annual Daytona-Busch HaH Mile, Sunday's event at Barberville, and Jones is trying to repeat as the overall series champ. Other entrants of record are former Grand National Champion Steve Eklund, Pete Hames, Tim Mertens, Terry Poovey, Rodney Farris, Billy Herndon and Robert Crabbe. The February 23 hearing on the California Department of Parks and Recreation's Title 14, which would require operators of orr-road vehicles under 600 pounds to wear helmets while operating the vehicles on Dec partment grounds, has been continued lO March 9 at 9 a.m. That meeting will take place at the Department of Parks and Recreation's building,1416 9th Street, Room 1442-2, Sacramento, California. . Daytona Cycle Week '87 officially gets underway on Monday, March 1, but AMA Championship Cup Series road racing actually kicks off Cycle Week on Saturday, February 28, when club racers from around the nation take part in two days of racing at Daytona International Speedway, ending with a 26C-rnile U.S. Endurance Championship Series race on Sunday, March 1. Monday's action at the Speedway includes both amatew Supercrou racing and vintage road racing. Tuesday end Wednesday wiD see practice for road racers at the Speedway, and timed road race qualifying will be conducted Thursday. Friday, March 6, the Arai Twin 50-Milers, qualifying races for the Daytona 200 by Arei, will take place as will the Pro Twins (formerly Battle of The Twins) race, and tha Supersport race. On Saturday the 250CC Grand Prix race will run in the morning with the $60,000 Daytona Supercross being held in the afternoon. The week culminates with the running of the 46th Annual Daytona 200 by Arai on Sunday. The Daytona 200 boasts a purse of $165,000, including $15,936 to the winner. Prior to the Daytona 200, the Camel Challenge will be run. The race is a f"lVe-lap sprint race that will pay the winner $10,000. Six riders, the top three finishers from each of the Arai Twin 50-Milers, will be invited to compete in the Camel Challenge. Total purse for the Camel Challenge is $17,500 and when that's added to the 200's purse, Sunday's racing will payout a whopping $182,500. If the same rider were to win the Camel Challenge and the 200, he'd go to the bank with $25,935. A total of over $330,000 has been posted for Cycle Week race•. David Bailey, the defending 500cc MX National Champion who is paralyzed from thewaistdownasa result of injuries surrered in a practice crash last month, is "feeling good and is in good spirits," according to his wife Gina.
