Practice saw some threatening weather conditions as rain began to drop, but as the racing started the skies cleared and the races were on. Ashley Epps put lOgether a I-I score to collect top honors in the 125cc Intermediate class. One of the most touch and go classes was the 125cc Intermediate division. Out to an immediate lead was Epps on his Honda. He was being chased by Canadian Bob Ebner, aboard a Kawasaki. Battling in third and fourth was Brian Broussard and Claude McQuaig. Rounding out the top five was T. J. Brantley. Epps continued to dominate the class, putting a respectable distance between himself and the others. Brantley was trying to make up for lost time and by the second lap had pa sed McQuaig and began to chase Brou sardo Hal[way through the molO Brantley had taken Broussard and Ebner, and wa~ now trying to lose ground on the leader, but Epps had his machine under complete control and wasn't taking any chances. A[ter some handlebar-to-handlebar cia hes and few Lire lOuching incidenLS the checkered nag came out and Epps was the UrstLO receive it, [ollowed by Brantley, Ebner, Broussard, and McQuaig. The econd moLO of the l25cc Intermediate class again was claimed right 0[( the start by Epps with Broussard giving chase. Broussard was certainly not secure in second, because right on his rear knobby was Brantley. Ebner, McQuaig and Robert Cassube were close in LOW. Brantley pulled a repeat o[ the first mpto and edged his way to second place. Broussard went down allowing Ebner lo also make his way around him. The top positions held all the way lo the checkered nag, with Epps the winner, followed by Broussard and Ebner. The Mini B class also saw some good racing from the future pro racers of motocross. Michael Poore was out front followed by Chris Brown, also on a Kawasaki. In third on a Yamaha was Todd Rousseau, the onJy Yamaha ride.r in a field of green machines. Travis Blackburn had Dana Losey dueling with him for fourth place. Losey and Blackburn both got past Rousseau near the hallway point. Brown was now gaining time on Poore and he certainly could aHord no mistakes. As the nag dropped it was still Poore, Brown, and Losey. Blackburn and Rousseau completed the top five. For a while it looked as though the second molO was going lo be a repeat of the first with poore again getting the upper hand and feeling heat from Brown as Rousseau and Losey, and Blackburn gave chase. On the second lap Losey was in trouble and went. down. The battle now was intense between Poore and Brown and on the next lap Brown made his way around Poore and tried to put some distance on him. Rousseau and Blackburn continued in a strong third and fourth. On the white nag lap the pressure was taken off Brown when a rider from another class got between him and Poore. Poore came in a strong second, Rousseau third, and Blackburn fourth. KTM-moumed Robb Mesecher was untouchable Sunday, as he droppedj ust 2.142 points to claim the overall victory at the Cali[ornia RacingClub' ClubChalienge Enduro in southern Cali[ornia's high desert. Mesecher and his 250cc KTM handily beat Yamaha YZ490 rider, Rick Daniel, who tallied 4.205 poinLS LO secure second O\'erall. Roundingoutthe top five were Randy Pretzer (4.2 13). couSampson (4.215) and Tony Casaga (~.232). "The course really made you think," said Mesecher. "It made you ride hard, and I scared mysel£ a couple of times out there." Joe Liker rode his Yamaha YZI25 to the£ir t [amily loop overall, drop· ping just 3.195 points and taking the 125cc C class vicLOry as well. Darren Rivers and his M-Star took second overall with a 5.202 point tally, while Rod Luker, Jr. finished third at 5.268. On a relatively dry and warm day, Mesecher managed LO make the best> a dusty course and wound up being the only rider to zero the first loop. Most o[ the riders agreed the first loop was a liule too slow and very dusty, including [ormer National mOlOcrosser Warren Reid. While Mesecher claimed the only first loop zero, Lowell Spiva dropped just one point despite suffering a nat tire heading into the first special test. Following a 39-minute break, the riders headed out on loop two and into a 36 mph section. But many riders found themselves with nat tires early in the loop, including Candy Hand and ScOtt Crawford. Hand actually noticed her nat as she rolled up to the starting chute. Immediatelj after the enduro, a motocross [inal event took place to determine the winning club team [or the Club Team Challenge, which also included scores for the enduro part of the event. Following the enduro, the Family Racing Association club team held a slim lead, thanks to some of FRA's team members Mesecher, Sampson, Tony Casaga, Mark Wiechman, Willy Musgrave and Steve Bebeck. Despite being outgunned off the start up Candy Ass Hill by Ron Lawson, Kinney Jones and Phil Williams, Musgrave and his Suzuki RMI25 found the way into the lead and crossed the finish line three seconds ahead o[ the next rider. Riding in his first-ever enduro, motocrosser Musgrave said, "(Lowell) Spiva really helped me understand o[
