We listen to the riders. We want to know what they like and dislike." Fleming also presented the AMA Sportsman of The Year award to Dick France. France, an avid motorcyclist and Director of the ISDE Support Fund, was the ISDE team manager for the past two years. France managed to get in a plug for the ISDE riders' fund. France said, "In the past we have been able to help with funds for the riders' expenses after they get to the ISDE, but very little if any for transportation' or equipment. Our goal is that after a rider has qualified for the ISDE team, the team committee will take care of all funding so the riders can concentrate fully on competing." District Directors representing Districtl7's 38 clubs awarded the highly coveted "Number One Plates" to class winners in dirt track and scrambles, ATv dirt track, enduro, trials, ice racing, hillclimb, motocross, stadium motocross, hare scrambles, and road. There were also 196 black and orange jackets .boldly emblazoned with the riders' class and the District logo awarded. Buzz Ruggles for the second year won the Motocross Expert Open class and in addition to the number one plate and jacket Ruggles gets to keep the seven Coot Chesseman Memorial Traveling Trophy for a year. . Paul Hayes, in addition to his duties as direc(or of trails, hillclimb and ice racing, has served as Banquet Committee Chairman Cor the past two years and Club Council President Gary Blakney said "I have no intention oC changing a winning combination, Paul will organize the banquet again in '87." There were many acclaims and awards, but the most popular winner was Mike Ashby. To a standing ova· tion, Ashby walked to the podium to receive a third place jacket he had earned in the 85cc Junior class.. Late in the season Ashby had suHered a terri ble acciden t. The doctors weren't sure if he would even live, much less walk again. But Mike, an honor student and top athlete is as tough a competitor in life as he was on the track. Mike still has a way to go before he's completely recovered, but his dad is hopeful that Mike will be riding again next year. Laelfies Up Winter Series By Fat Freddie BRIDGE OF THE GODS, WA, FEB. I After a one-week postponement, .due to three feet of snow, the second round of the Columbia Trials Association Winter Series got underway with 27 riders enjoying a perCect day for observed trials. ' The Bridge oC the Gods area is known to National riders Cor its severe terrain, sharp rocks, and broken en,. gine cases. It can be quite a job for course marshals to set up sections that are challenging but yet safe. George Belanger did just that with· all classes having a very Cun ride. The Rank Novice class was topped by Dinah Moore with Katie Checkley a close second. Mike Medick rode to the Novice class victory as did Dennis Tollefson . in the Intermediate class. Advanced and Expert class ri4llers attacked 24 sections one time, each on an approximately II-mile loop. Former Montana State champion, Jay Lael, beat Cormer Oregon State champion, Jay Terry, Cor the Expert class win. ISDE rider Barrett Brown completely dominated the Advanced class again beating Chuck Bassitt who finished in second place. At the end oC the day a few Expert riders were seen circulating a petition asking Barrett to please return to ISDE competition! WishCul thinking boys. • Results RANK NOV: 1. Dinah Moo.e (38); 2.
