CMC/Dodge Truck Golden State Amateur MX: Round 5 Dobb scores at Glen Helen By Mike Larson Photos by Ron Gee SAN BERNARDINO, CA, FEB. 7 James Dobb piloted his Cagiva to a comefrom-behind win in the second 125cc Division Two moto to steal the overall victory in Saturday's racing at Glen Helen Raceway. Dobb finished second in the first moto behind Paul Vlach, then scorched to the front of the pack after a fourth place 8 start in mota two to collect the win and the overall victory. The 500cc Intermediate class was filled with inconsistent finishes and crashes. Jon miller put together the day's most consisitent performance, finishing second in both motos to garner top honors. Miller also won thl' Vet Masters class in a doublemota sweep. In the 250cc Junior Division One rdllks, Jim Kuntz put together a charge in the second moto to pass first-Illoto winner Tom Hamalainen for the mota win and the overall victory. Two tracks were used at Glen Helen for this rdce with the Mini and the Beginner classes using the regular circuit and most of the Juniors and Intermediate racing on a new track utili,jng parts of the orr-road track and some newly built sections. Moto one in the 125cc Division Two ranks saw Vlach leading the field through turn one ahead of Vohland, Dobb and Jimmy Lewis, with the top four running in close fonnation. On lap two Vlach and Vohland were running side-by-side through the rockers when Vohland got out of shape and bounced orr the track and into the banners. Bv the time Vohland. got going again he was well behind the leaders. . Vlach led Dobb around the circuit for the rest of the race, with only a small gap separating them. Vlach took the win-with Dobb and Lewis rounding out the top three. In moto two Vlach ag-din gunned down the field in turn one and powered his Honda out to a quick early lead. Vlach tried hard to stretch out a lead on the next three riders; Kerry Mulligan, Terry Swan on and Dobb, uut all three kept Vlach within striking distance. On lap four Vlacll washt.'d out in a sandy turn and Mulligan, wanson and Dobb all jetted by as Vlach struggled togetgoingagain in fourth. Dobb wasted no time disposing of uoth Swanson and Mulligan and took over the lead within the lap. From then on it was an all Dobu show, as he turned on the gas and managed to put some di tance on the battle for second between Swanson England's James Dobb motored his Cagiva to a come-from-behind win in the second 125cc rnterrnediate Division Two moto for the overall. and Mulligan for the victory. Mulligan snuck by Swanson on the last lap to take over second place. Vlach bung on for fourth and took second overall with his I-4 tally. The 500cc Intermediate class had Mark Maynor holding the lead at the end of the first lap in moto one, closely followed by Mike Dunlap. Maynor and Dunlap had a good battle for the lead in the first three laps of the race, then Dunlap shot by Maynor in the hairpin following tbe table-top. Maynor didn't last long in second pl.ace, as a cl1arging Shane Johnson blasted past and set out after the leader. Johnson wasted no time reeling in and passing Dunlap, then roosted away to a comfortable lead over Dunlap and Craig Davis. Davis was able to take a quicker line througb the rockers and bounced past Dunlap and into second. On lap six Johnson went down in the sandy hairpin that had been giving riders fits all day. Davis assumed the lead and never gave it up finishing ahead of Miller and Dunlap. The second moto Mike McClain put his 13th place finish in the first moto behind, as he jammed out to an early lead and never looked back taking the moto victory. Darrin Hoeft was holding down the second place slot when he got into a tank-slapper after the jump leading to the second uphill section and crashed. Hoeft's crash let Miller move into second place which he held ta the finish for me overall win. In the 250cc Junior Division One ranks Hamalainen grabbed the first mota holeshot pursued by Damon Burg and David Emery. Hamalainen was able to stretch out his lead through the rest of the moto as Burg. and Emery dropped back. Kuntz put together a good assault as he sliced his way through the pack to finish second behind Hamalainen wim Dan Defalco rounding out me top three. Hamalainen jetted out to the initial lead in moto two, with Kuntz back in fourth place. Kuntz wasted no time getting to the from and reeling in Hamalainen. By lap two he was run- ning right on Hamalainen's rear fender. On the front straight Kuntz pulled alongside Hamalainen and grabbed the faster line as they entered the next comer, blasting by into the lead. Kuntz had no trouble for the rest of the mota. He held 0[£ the cl1aJlenges of Hamalainen (Q score the moto win and the overall victory. Hamalainen finished a confortable second for second overall.
