ILL. SG•• lac. lOW. D.AL."S CALL CS'll,~·O-.'.S. _ "You never know what's going to happen on the ice," said Garth Brow early in this year's Indoor Ice Racing Series. The six-time series champ found himself in an unusual spot - third place in point standings with just one race left - as Illinois rider Dave _ Hebb leaped to a seven-pomt lead over Indiana's Dan Ingram at Muskegon. Others knotted in a [ourP;Oint spre'dd ~overing second through slxt.h place mc~u~e the r~st of t~e "Mlchlgan Mafia of EddIe Morns, Bryan Hardin, Mike Rhodes, and Chuck Springsteen. Hebb, a veteran dirt tracker from Canton, Illinois, rode to victory in [our offive round-robin heats, putting together a near-perfect 14 point night at Muskegon's Walker Arena. Hebb and Ingram had been tied in points a£Ler earlier racing at Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Danville and Peoria, Illinois. Ingram, who has come close to winning the overdll series both of the last two years, had a bad night at Muskegon, scoring just seven points a£Ler going down twice in the heats. However, the Clennont, Indiana, rider can find some consolation in the fact that he is tied for first place in ATV points, a new pursuit [or the veteran di rt tracker. Hebb has put his Thompson Racing/Nolan Helmets/VMO/Chivington Honda/Hi-Point/KK Supplyl Phillips 66 Honda into the points lead without winning a main event. "The points are scored in the heats," Hebb explained. "I got the lead by riding consistently there," he added. Hebb then went on to take second place behind winner Eddie Morris in the non-points Muskegon final. Hebb and builder-owner Dan Thompson, who has [our bikes entered in the series, also survived a teardown underwritten by Dave Knapp whochallenged the legality o[ the leader's "old style" 250cc Honda engine and ex· haust. The main event, which collects the topeight point-scorers of the evening and is always a highlight oCthe show, had a variety of problems getting underway. Half the [ield rinally started [rom the penalty line with only Hebb and Morris on the front row. Despile a lot of jousting back in the field, those two stayed in front with Morris seeking out the win a he was literdlly pushed across the finish line by Hebb's front wheel. Promoter Staton Lorenz kept the racing exceptionally competitive at Muskegon. "It took nine points to make the final," he said, noting that was an unusually high number. Lorenz was quick to praise several riders for their competitive performances. "LaunceSulaty has frultured asan ice racer and a gentleman," Lorenz said. "Not only did he turn in a good per· formance tonight, but most people aren't aware that his newborn son nearly died just before we went to Illinois." Fortunately, the new baby is now recovering-. Veteran ice race audiences also noted the quick development o[ Ohio rookies Don Estep and SCOtt Stump as Estep was the only rider to defeat Hebbin heats at Muskegon and Stump also won his first heat race on ice. As the 16-rider invitational field looks forward to the final round on January 31 at Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio, a number of riders appear to havean opportunity to take the championship - if they can cdtch Hebb. ''I'll go into Troy just as I did aU the other," Hebb said. ''I'd really like to take the number one plate back home." Hebb iscenainly aware tha t another seven or eight-point swing, such as the one he rode into first place at Muskegon is always possible. Ingram, who is riding Bart Markel's original ice bike, one with solid struts replacing the shocks, doesn't count himself out. ''I've got a chance at Troy," he said firmly. Then, echoing the spectre of Brow who is just one point behind him and must be considered a threat, Ingram added, "Anything can happen on the ice." • Results MUSKEGON FINAL: 1. Ed Morris; 2.
