. Profile #20 The "I like DIRT· RIDER's serious, scientific approach to evaluating motorcycles." -Jeff Smith Name: Jeff Smith Occupation: Product Manager, Can-Am U.S.A. Job description: "My job is to coordinate the design and production of Can-Am motorcycles and to provide information about the bikes to consumers, dealers, and our sales staff." Riding history: "My father waS a trials rider in England, and because he loved to ride motorcycles, he thought his son should do the same. I started riding when I was about nine. Later, I served a five-year general apprenticeship .with the BSA Co. in England. I was offered a job with Bombardier (Can-Am's parent company) when they began their . motorcycle project and have been with them for 15 years. A high point in my career came in 1970, when I was awarded an M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by the Queen for services to motorcycles. Track record: "I have ridden the ISDE 12 times. Beginning in 1951 at sixteen years of age with a gold medal, and finishing 35 years, 8 golds, and 3 bronzes later in Italy in 1986. Other wins include: British Trials Championship 1953 and '54, Scottish Six Days Trial in 1955, nine times British Motocross champion and World 500 Motocross champion in 1964 and '65. But most satisfying of all is to have won the U.S. Super Senior Hare Scrambles Title for the past four years. It's great to still be getting fun out of motorcycles!" Bikes currently owned: "In alphabetical order, to show no favoritism, because they all are marvelous; three BSA's, six CanAm's, three Douglas dirt trackers, a Guzzi Falconi, and two Hondas." Magazine: "I like DIR T RIDER 's serious, scientific approach to evaluating motorcycles. With the other magazines, I look at the pictures, which is what you normally do with a comic book. But I really read DIR T RIDER because there's real meat to it and a great deal of thought goes into the articles. A lot of us are looking for something sensible in a magazine and DIR T RIDER's it."
