In the rirst l25cc moLO, Cooper beat Tichenor, Carlo Coen and Todd Dehoop in the first tum mud drags and rode flawlessly to the win. Tichenor picked orr Coen and rode conservatively ror a second-place rinish. Series contender Andrews said, "I got _stuck behind Kenny Bollmeier and couldn't get up that hill." Tichenor commented, "I was sliding all over the seat. In the next moLO it will be tricky because no one knows where the good lines are." Andrew's Honda got the best traction in moLO two and led Doug Hoover and Tichenor to the first assault on Heartbreak Hill. Andrews and Tichenor picked bad lines and Coen, Milt Solander, Billy Whitley and Kenny Bollmeier took over the lead. Cooper slithered up the hill near last, but Tichenor was through ror the day. Tichenor's mechanic, Alan Baker, explained, "Ronnie tried it; then pushed it. The mud was two reet deep and he rinally blew the clutch. I'm really disappointed ror him. He rode a great series. What a way to end it." Barry Carsten rode a skilL£ul race and passed Coen's Kawasaki for the moLO win. "I'm happy, but I reel like a rolling slime ball," said Cooper. Amateur Competition in the l25cc A class opened with Jay Mann, Kenny Kiuar and Greg Bowen starring in moLO one. He explained later, "We were sitting on the line when my rriend, Mike Himanek, noticed that all the teeth were gone Crom my rear sprocket. We rushed th~ bike back LO the pits and Dad changed the wheel." Bowen charged back to the number three spot after his delayed departure. Vaillancourt topped Earl May in' the moto ror the day's overall, but Bowen's erron earned him the championship. Rick Lindell held a two point 500cc A lead over his Yamaha teammate Mike Stahman, with Somersett KTM's Bob Sorenson close behind. Stahman evened the tally by topping Sorenson and Lindell in moto one. Lindell took charge with a secondmoLO lead but toppfed over on the now famous hill as Stahlman roosted by taking control or the molO. Lindell stuck on the £ina] time that counted, Sorenson took second in the moLO, with Stahlman winning the championship. Stahlman said later, "Rick and I got a lot or help this month rrom Greg Quador and Yamaha's new eastern support truck." In the l25cc B chase, David BeckingLOn copped the title with a third behind Damon Bradshaw and John Kitsch. Beckington said, "It would have been crazy to race with Bradshaw and risk losing my head." He rode his Kawasaki 10 another 500cc B win, but lost the final 250cc contest LO Rodney Ohr. Searingen said, "I had the lead in the final moLO when the head gasket blew. I was lucky.
