Ireland in overJlriY~

MEDFORD, OR, JAN. 11
Diminutive speedster Jo Don
Ireland was in overdrive during indoor short track action at
Medford's Expo Park Arena. Ireland stole two classes, winning the 60
and 80ccA main events. Also joining
Ireland in the winner's circle was
Honda jockey Bob Ingle, who was
the only other double class winner
in the evening's program.
Ireland has been a terror in the 60
and 80cc classes and due to the absence
of Shawn Highland and Ryan Huff·
man, Ireland had it all to himself in
both main events. John Williams
chased Ireland all the way to the
checkers in the 60cc A main, but to no
avail as Ireland chalked up win number one over Williams and third place
finisher Jason Menteer, ~ho was
making his racing debut. Ireland was
back out front in the 80cc A main and
took another well deserved victory to
cap off his double class demolition
ahead of second and third place finishers Jason Sutton and Donald Valentine.
AMA Junior pro flat tracker Ingle
launched his Honda to the head of
the pack while Yamaha speedster
Mike Hamilton, Jerry. Thomasson
and Gary Braden were the Class C
riders' closest competition. Ingle held
off Braden to win the elite 250cc A
main with Braden in tow. Third fell
to Thomasson while Hamilton took
fourth, a position unfamiliar to the
southern Oregon ace. Ingle and
ThomassoPl had a brutal battle once
again, this time in the Old Timers
(30+) final. Ingle has been on the gas
of late and has dominated the class all
season. Tonight was much the same
as Ingle slid his way to the checkered
flag for win number two over Thorn·
asson, Charlie Higdon and Walt
Wingler.
John Williams outrode the Open
class contestants to win the exciting
Open A main with Carl Tresser,
Higdon and Herb Courier trading
paint for the number two spot, Tresser
triumphed for second at the completion; Higdon was third.
The evening's finale was the Open
Pro main event with no displacement
limit. Hamilton wa~ out for revenge
due to dismal finishes in the 250cc
and Open mains and shot to the head
of the pack on the opening lap of
competition while Ingle and AMA
Expert Mark Lagaira did all they
could to overtake MX pro Hamilton,
who would go on to win and take top
cash payoff.
