Approaching the finish line,' Lewis had a comfortable lead over Graves, who in turn held a safe distance on Willert. Bu t Willert was anything but safe as he led Gonzalez and Montgomery into the final mrn before the finish line. Montgomery blasted by Gonzalez heading into the turn but missed a shift through the corner which ended his drive toward Willen. Gonzalez tried LO take advantage of Montgomery's mistake, but Montgomery shut her off as they came out of the turn to take fourth by only a few feet. McClintock grabbed the holeshot at the start of the second mow and was quickly passed by Lew] , but at the bouom of the big downhill, Lewis went wide and McClinlOck slipped back inLO first. Guy Deckert held third but was challenged by Mike McLlin. Lewis trailed McClintock for a few laps, then wok the lead on lap four. McLain passed Decken on lap two, while back in fifth Bagwell Jeda pack consisting of Graves, Joe Marzino, Billy Woods, Gallegos, Gonzalezand Montgomery. Headingimo the fifth lap Woods stalled and fell in the tight turn before the finish line, and Gallegos and Gonzalez, both on Woods' tail, got stock in the turn as well. Montgomery took evasive action and went wide, clearing the pileup and moving to eighth. Lewis moved away from McClintock and cruised LO the win, while McClintock finished well ahead of McLain. Deckert held off the last-lap challenges of Bagwell to claim fourth, and Graves came across Sixth lor second overall. Montgomery couldn't catch Marzino, but his 4-8 score was good enough for third overall. • Results Kerry Mulligan and Tallon Vohland battle for second place in the 125cc Intermediate division two class. Krah out-duels Larsson at Carlsbad By Nate Rauba CARLSBAD, CA, JAN. 17 Yamaha-mounted Bob Krah survived two moto-Iong battles against long-time rival Lars Larsson to win the Old Timer Master 'class today at Carlsbad Raceway. After a seesaw duel with Larsson early in the first moto Krah took the Iea.d for g ood ' at t h<: h a If~ay pomt and won by a smgle bIke length. In the ,second mow, Krah kept Larsson behind him for the entire molO, but once again it was a close finish, as Krdh'lOok his second win in a row in the series. hi 250cc Intermediate action, Yamaha-mounted Jimmy Lewis took a convincing division one win, leaving the rest of the pack far behind in both motos. Most of the action took place behind Lewis when a number of riders battled fiercely for the top five positions. Darrin Hoeft took the overall victory in the 500cc Intermediate class by running away with the first mow and then placing second in the final round. M!ke McLam led HoelL lo the checkers m the second mow, but an II th in round one lelL him out of contention for the overall. In the OT Master race, Larsson grabbed the early lead at the start of the first moto inches ahead of Terry Davis (Hon) and Krah. Krah wasted no time getting by Davis then quickly moved by Larsson before the end of the first lap. Larsson s~ruck back, though, and was in the lead again on lap two. Back in third a battle was 'shaping up between Davis and Honda-mounted Richard Schilling, while a liule further behind, Behgt Johansson (Honda)- held off OT Intermediates Robert Fortier and Ken Feulner. On the third time around of the six lap race, Krah got by Larsson once again, and Schilling took third' and pulled away from Davis. Lars'son stayed "ery close to Krah for the remainder of the mow but couldn't find a way lO get back into the lead. Krah crossed the finish line a bike length ahead of Larsson, whileSchilling took third ahead of Davis. After battling with Johansson, Fortier crossed the line fifth lO take first in the Intermediate class. Intermediate rider Ed Smith (Kawasaki) grabbed the holeshot at the start of the second mow but was passed by Krah, Larsson and Schilling on the first lap. Krah couldn't get away from Larsson, and the two set a pace that quickly left Schilling behind. Larsson kept the pressure on Krah for the entire mow, but Krah kept his cool and never made any mistakes that would let Larsson by lO take another close victory. Schilling crossed the line third for th ird overall in the OT Masters, while Fortier once again moved up lO take fourth and first in the Intermediate class. ' David Bagwell (Honda) jammed into the lead in the first 250cc Intermediate division one mow with Mike Kurzeja; Lewis, ;-\dam Gallegos and Toney Graves trailing. Lewis moved into the lead on the first lap when Bagwell fell out of the scene and quickly began to move away from Kurzeja. Gallegos fell on lap two which moved Graves into a position to pass Kurzeja for second. Near the end of lap three Kurzeja bailed on a drop-off, and as he was picking up his machine, Gallegos nailed him and fell too. This put Fred Willert into third, but that didn't last for 60 0-8: 1.
