Robby Neeley (1) and overall winner Brian Mc Neill (25) fought for the top honors in the 125-50OCc Pro class at Montrose MX. turned in strong performances that netted overall.wins in the I 25cc Amateur and Open Pro divisions, respectively. Hank Moree backed up his Senior Mini victory with runner-up honors in 125cc Amateur racing. The first Open Pro mow saw E&H Honda's Tim Terry nail the hole hot for a runaway win while Robby eeley and McNeill settled inw a molOlong dice for second that sa w ee1ey finish one second ahead of McNeill. "I could close on eeley in some sections," said Sandhills Cycle Centerbacked McNeill, "but I had thrown away my goggles halfway through the mow and couldn't see lo pass." Gear's Neeley claimed the second mow holeshot with McNeill in pursuit. On lap two, McNeill shot by in the uphill whoops section and held for the win over eeley, neuing firsl overall via his 3-1 score. Terry, SPOlled in 14lh on the firsllap, bauled to a founh place finish and third overall behind Neeley. Neeley came back in the Senior division and won bolh mOlOS after shaking off a first mow challenge from Roger Lineberger. Steve Lewis finished econd overall via his 3-2 over Lineberger's 2-4 while contender Steve Genter was sidelined for the day after crashing from second position in mow one. Honda of Winston-Salem/Pro Circuit's Houser looked unbeatable in the first I25cc Amateur mota, maintaining a seven second lead over Paul Malin of England. "Since I staned riding a 250," said Houser, "I've been faster on my 125 bike. ", Houser demonstrated his point with a runaway win in the second mow lO net a perfect score. Malin turned a 10th place stan into a fourth place finish and third overall. Moree, riding a 105cc mini, tallied 3-2 for second. Eddie Almond showed the way at the start of the first 250cc Amateur mota while Houser and Eric Rogers wrestled for second position. The Houser/Rogers duel continued until the last lap when Houser fell. Roger finished second behind Almond while Houser remounted for third. Mow two saw Rogers take the holeshot and the mow win to earn tOp gold while Houser, in his second time out on a 250, finished second for second overall. Canada's Ross Pederson overcame a disappointing fifth-place finish in the first 250cc Pro mow by claiming the second-mow win and the overall. Tim Ealy, Brazilian National MX star and Kenny Keylon's state side mechanic, took the holeshot in the first Open Pro mow and sailed, but not for long. "I had the wrong from tire on the bike," said Ealy, "And my arms pumped up. Actually, it was probably my age that slowed me down'" Keller wasted no time moving past second place rider Mike Stahlman then took over the lead to dominated to the end. John Collins moved up lO follow behind Keller until Scooter Stafford dove ahead and put claims lO the second place position. Traffic caused by slower riders in the last laps of the race added excitement, but resulted in no changes in positions. Keller easily led Stafford, Collins, Shane Drew and Carroll Richardson across the finish line in the lop five positions. Honda mounted Chuck Weinberg claimed the early lead in the second mow. Keller plowed lO the front in lap two, where he stayed lO the end. Stafford brought Iris Yamaha in behind the leader to tie up second overall. Kawasaki-mounted Chris Coleman battled Frisz for the lead at the stan of the first l25cc Pro mow. Coleman came out on lop. Frisz was hot and kept the pressure on, taking over the lead but failing lO pull away from Coleman. The two moved out from the pack, leaving Carl Vaillancourt lO hold off Vince DeVane for third. DeVane went down, giving Valincourt and Peter Hichens time to pull away before he was back on the gas. . Frisz and Coleman cruised alone out from until they started lO lap slower riders. The lead then changed back and forth several times. Coleman dropped off the pace slightly but was soon back on the leader's tail in a last lap attempt lO take the win. Frisz cut through traffic and crui ed Lo the checkered flag as Coleman followed in second. Pederson had found himseH midpack at the stan of the moLO, but steadily worked hi way up lO finish in a distant third. Alley Semar held onto fourth as DeVane and Brian McElroy followed. Frisz's Suzuki flashed into the lead at the stan of the second mow with DeVane, McElroy, Pederson, Coleman and Steve Hess pushing from behind. McElroy moved up to challenge Frisz then dove around into the lead. Frisz found DeVane breathing down his neck as Pederson closed in behind them. McElroy pulled slightly away then came into traffic.
