Chuck Sun emerged a 500cc Champion by winning five of eight event . In Europe, Andre MaJherbe topped the 500 c class. His counu-yman, Georges jobe, won the 250cc Championship as Everts repeated in the I25cc cia s. Belgium completed their clean sweep (all three individual titles plus the two team championships) by LOpping both the Trophee and .Motocross des alion events. In 1981 Mark Barnell remained on LOp of the l25c class, winning the first 14 moLOS of lhe eightevelll series.. Barnell also won six of the 12 upercross events to claim the title. Kent Howerton repeated as 250cc Champion while Bro Glover added his fourth and fifth AMA Championships by LOpping the 500cc class and the Trans-USA eries. Overseas, Harry Everts notched his third straight 125cc Ii tie. England's Neil Hudson edged Jobe of the 250cc title while Mal herbe repeated as 500cc Champion. The biggest sLOry of the year for American mOlocross was the weep of the world team rdces - the 250cc Trophee des Nations and the 500cc MOlocrosS des ations. America's first and second victorie ever in team racingwere achieved by Honda team riders when the original multi-factory all-star team selected had to bow out because of withdrawal of factory support. A last-minute effort, orchestrated by the AMA, Dick Miller of Motocross Action magazine and Larry Maiers of Hi-PointRacing Products, raised fan contributions (plus matching amounts from Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki) LO assist the Honda team effOTt. No one in Europe expected much of a showing by a single factory team against the beSt each nation had to oHer. And then the Honda foursome 01 Chuck Sun, Danny LaPorte, Johnny O'Mara and Donnie Hansen, cheered on and no doubt inspired by team coordinator Roger DeCoster, did it to the continentals. Twice. American teams remain undefeated to this date - six straight years of world team racing dominance. Mark Barnell won his third straight 125cc title in 1982. Two new champions emerged in the larger displacement classes. Donnie Hansen LOPped the 250s while Darrell Schul tz became the 500cc Champion. In Europe, Eric Geboers headed the 125cc GP Series. The big news came from the other two classes. Americans won both championshi ps. Brad Lackey became the first American towin a World Championship by taking the 500cc title. A few weeks later, Danny LaPorte clinched the 250cc Championship. America's world team, again an all-Honda effort, swept the two team races. Danny (Magoo) Chandler became the fir t rider ever LO win all fourmotos of the two team matches as he led teammates David Bailey, Johnny O'Mara and Jim Gibson to victory. Amazingly, the Honda team succeeded despite the absence of their two injured National ChampionsHansen and Schultz.
