World Sports/USHRA ANnacross Championship: Round 1 Bellora, Abel ace Augusta AX By Davey Coombs AUGUSTA, GA, JAN. 9-10 Kentucky's Billy Abel and Pennsylvania's Dickie Bellora each scored wins at the opening round of the 1987 World Sports/USHRA Arenacross Championships tonight in Augusla. The Hi-Point/Scott/ Barr's Comp.-backed Bellora made an early lead Slick lo lhe finish on Friday's firsl nighl of Brian Stanley (8) and Brian Carroll (1 0) mix it up in a battle for fourth place in Saturday night action at Augusta's Arenacross. racing ashefought oH Abel, the most improved arena rider onche ci'rcuit, and Cagiva-~ountedMike jones, who gave the European bike it's highest indoor finish to date. Abel took his turn in the winner's circle on Saturday as he pushed his DRC/EP Performs/Greenhou e Honda by jones in the late going and held on until the checkers flew to card the win. 15,000 fans packed the Augusta County Civic Center as the 7,500 seat arena registered two complete sell-outs. A Sunday afternoon matinee was requested by building officials besieged by ticket orders, but did not materialize due to rider committrnents for that day's round of the Florida Winter AM Series. Bellora had shown indoor promise late in the '86 series as he climbed from ninth to fourth in the final three rounds with wins in Richmond and New York. And after Friday's practice he looked like a sure-bet for Au usta as he pounded the jumphlled front straight into a nasty double-tripTeleap. The first riders with a chance to match air time with Bellora were his heat one rivals. Gerald Wood, Gearl ScottiShoei's Brian Stanley, jones, and last year's series runner-up Barry Carsten took their spots on the gate with the others, butoutofturn one it was Bellora alone out front. Wood soon found himself on the canvas and out of contention after a first lap tangle in the whoops. Stanley followed him to the back of the pack with a fall of his own, as did Rob McCullough. jones and Carsten kept things organized enough to make top four transfer spots, but they had to follow ttl Jwpe you guys are taking notes." When Bob "Hurricane" Hannah finished first on his RM250 in the AMA Florida Wmter Series at Dade City, his students (NOTE: pictured to the right, and behind, their instructor) were unhappy with the course. Which is understandable, since every time Hurricane passes them, they flunk. And Hannah's not the only one on Suzuki's faculty. Ronnie Tichenor got straight P1s at Dade City on an RMl25. And JImmy Gaddis taught Huron how it's done on an RM80 in Round Two of the Golden State Nationals. Three races, three wins, one lesson: That the difference between Suzuki's 'ff! RMs, and their competitors is proving to be more than academic. So this year, graduate to a Suzuki Right on, Suzuki RM80, 125 or 250. There's no faster way to get to the head of your class.
