Ed Morris (85x) leads Dan Ingram (31) in Peoria; Ingram won both rounds in Illinois to tie Dave Hebb in the point standings. Morri held fifth until lap five when Hardin fell in turn two. Brow used this opponuni ty to get by Morris and into founh. Ingram was able to mu cle his way around Springsteen on lap seven and the top five positions were set. Ingram, Springsteen and Hebb went to the winner's circle with Brow, Morri , Drake, Rhoads and a remounted Hardin rounding out the field. Saturday saw racing move to the Peoria Civic Center where the longer straightaways seemed to suit Ingram all the beller a he moved through the heats undefeated to earn the pole in the final. Hebb spoiled what had been a perfect night for the veteran racer by finishing third in round two behind Ingram and Rhoads but he still earned the number two starting position. Hardin capped off two nights of hard riding with two wins and three seconds for the third spot. Brow was struggling all night and seemed just a little off form but what hurt most wa being di qualified from the last heat for jumping the start from the penalty line. The six-time series champ wa still able to earn the la t front row tan position. By Dave Hoenig Photos by Flat Trak Fotos DANVILLE/PEORIA, [L, JAN. 9-10 The 1987 AMA Invitational Indoor Pro Ice Racing Series hit Illinois on the same weekend as the first major winter storm which dumped as much as a foot of snow on the area. Nei ther the now nor the opposition could top Dan Ingram, who i definitely a star on (he rise in promoter Stanton Lorenz's traveling ice show. Ingram rode hi am Ingram/CummingH-D/ K&N/BeII/N-D/JeffGordoniBameusponsored Honda to main event wins at both Danville and PeOJ'ia. Chuck Spring teen and Brian Hardin captured se onds while Dave Hebb took third place money both night. Ingram tempered his aggressive riding with a smooth style thatallowI'd him to dominate the racing both nights. He was even able to take time out at Peoria to win the Four-Wheel ATV final over five other qualifiers. The Friday night race at Danville faced the worst of the storm and undoubtedly kept many fans home and contributed to the late arrival of competitors Chuck Springsteen and defending series champ Garth Brow. Dave Knappclid not make it to either event. Ingram was beaten by Hebb in heat one but that was hi only defeat. Spring teen also had a good night with four wins and a second to [ngram in round four, giving them the pole and second position in the final. High point man at Ft. Wayne, Mike Rhoads suffered mechanical problem but tun r Byron Mollo eau repaired a broken valve and got Rhoads into the final by one point. Hebb and II Ed Morri ,the only man to ride all 12 years of the series, had a very ineonsistant night but nailed down the seeond row pole. Rhoads, pringsteen and Drake all had a variety of mechanical problems and spills but filled out the back row. When tarter Larrry Schmid flashed the green for the final Ingram, Hardin, Hebb and Morris forged to the front with Brow, Rhoads, Springsteen and Drake following. The first three formed a tight line with Morris and Brow a shoTt clistahce back with Springsteen moving by Rhoads. They held the same untJl lap seven when Brow's frustrating night continued and problems dropped him into last place. The night ended with a popular win by Ingram' and the pro-Illinois and Indiana crowd also celebrated the fact that Illinois' Hebb and Incliana's Ingram were now tied for the point lead with two races remaining on the schedule.
