As the race continued, both Lechien and Ward pulled away from the rest ofthe pack, while battling closely for the lead. Wageman sat firmly· in third, while Suzuki's Kehoe began to work his way through the pack. Kehoe shot past Watts, then Ryan and Frank, who had dropped to seventh in one lap. Kehoe then set after teammate Holland and chased him for the next three laps before settling into fourth behind Wageman. Meanwhile, the battle up front remained tight between Lechien and Ward. With one lap remaining, Ward tried everything in the book to get around Lechien but failed. Lechien took his second moto win of the day ahead of Ward, Wageman, Kehoe, Yamaha rider jeff Pestana, Holland, Frank, Davis, Doug O'Donnell and Shaun Wooten. The start of the first 125cc Pro moto saw Suzuki teamster Donny Schmit power into the lead ahead of Honda rider Kyle Lewis. Schmit and Lewis quickly pulled away from the pack, but during the third lap, Schmit bailed off through a section of rocker jumps and broke his collarbone. Schmit'S crash gave Lewis an aulOmatic huge lead over the new secondplace rider, Kawasaki-mounted Bader Manneh. Following Manneh closely were Cagiva rider A.J. Whiting, jeff Matiasevich (Kawasaki), jeff Mabery (Yamaha), Scott Brown (Yamaha) and Dyck. Trailing the field was Honda-mounted Larry Brooks, who was suffering vision problems because of the mud. After a couple of laps, Brooks had pulled off his goggles and was carrying his prescription glasses in his teeth. He sat out the rest of the day. , While Lewis held command of the lead, Yamaha-mounted Dyck was busy working his way up through the pack, passing one rider ata time until he was righton Whiting's rear fender. With Dyck hounding him in every turn, Whiting turned up the boost and started reeling in Manneh with Dyck in his draft. just past the haH· way point, both Whiting and Dyck slipped by Manneh for second and third. As the race progressed, Whiting pulled away slightly on Dyck. From this point on, positions remained unchanged with Lewis taking the win ahead of Whiting, Dyck, Manneh, Brian Manley, Terry Fowler, Ryan, Mike Kiedrowski, Willie Sur· ratt and Tyson Vohland. Dyck took command of the second moto at the drop of the gate, but hot on his tracks was Whiting. Manneh, Doug Dubach and Keith O'Neal rounded out the lOp five. During the second lap, Whiting dropped out of the race, giving second 10 fellow Cagiva rider Dubach. Dyck, who was mastering the mud with ease, was having no problems staying comfortably ahead of Dubach, who had developed a huge advantage over Fowler·. Fowler had his hands full with Lewis breathing heavily down his back. With four laps remaining, Lewis found the fast line around Fowler for third. Dyck flawlessly led a spread-out parade of 125cc riders to the checkered £lag for the overall viclOry. Second in the molO went 10 Dubach, who' finished 19th in the first molO after crashing twice. It rained all day long. turn, letting Larson take over the lead. Andrews recovered quickly enough 10 keep Owens from passing. Following in fifth was Kawasakimounted Mike Larson. -- Phil Larson led for a lap before he, too, fell and dropped out of the picture. Andrews briefly had the lead again before Mike Larson moved up and zapped him. Once into the lead, Larson put to work his home-state Washington, mud-riding experience and blitzed home for the win. Second eventually went 10 Watts, who worked his way up from the back of the pack. Also working his way up from a poor start was Fisher, who landed third in the molO ahead of Andrews, Honda rider Brian Myerscough and Willy Simons. Phil Larson grabbed the holeshot in the shortened, eight-lap second molO with Fisher in second and Andrews third. Larson looked to have the win wrapped up, but crashed in the mud, giving Fisher the lead a few laps from the finish. Fisher stayed close 10 Larson throughout the race and took advantage of Larson's late-moto bobble. Fisher motored by Larson and stayed upright for the remaining few laps to take the win and overall. Third in the molO and second overall went 10 Andrews, while fourth and fifth in . the molO went to English rider Mark Banks and Dan Berg. In Mini Expert action, Suzukimounted jimmy Gaddis was the rider to beat in the first moto. He was chased by Kawasaki rider jeff Emig throughout the moto but shook free from him and into a commanding lead halfway through the race. A pair of Suzuki riders, Butch Smith and Buddy Antunez, battled back and fourth over third place, and it was Smith getting the upper hand after Antunez crashed. At the end of the moto, it was Gaddis way out in front followed by Emig, Smith, Antunez and Brian Gipson (Suzuki). Gaddis' bid for the overall victory came 10 an abrupt end after getting involved in a huge first-turn pileup in the second molO. A number ofriders slid out in the slippery mud, and taking advantage of the pile·up was 'Yamaha rider Chad Pederson and Smith. The duel lasted right down to the finish, but Grossi held on. Staten won the molO ahead of Grossi, Semics and Zahrt. The second moto saw Semics take the early lead, but his bike stalled halfway into the first lap, giving Staten the lead.
