"'MOTORCYCLIST and DIRT RIDER make it seem like Christmas every month!" -Santa Claus Name: Santa Claus be way radical, especially on my Sahara loop!" Occupation: Owner/operator, annual overnight delivery service Riding history: "Back in the old days, my deliveries were .. made in a little red sleigh drawn by eight tiny reindeer. Over the years, I've tried about every- . thing-horseless carriage, Harley 74 with a sidecar, Toyota 4x4 with a V-Haul trailer-but considering the terrain I have to negotiate, the mileage I do, and the speed I must travel, a Paris-Dakar BMW works best. With its limited load capacity, I have to make more than one trip, but that just lets me get in more riding time! And I never run out of gas. But I'm willing to try almost anything. I've even gone back to the little red sleigh and eight tiny reindeer, but with a twist; I let them ride the bikes while I relax in the back!" Riding preference: "Well, since I really have to hustle only one night a year, I can use just about anything that pleases me on the other 364 days. I. cover a lot of ground, finding out who's been naughty or nice, so I go through a lot of bikes. It depends how I feel on a given day. Sometimes I just like to cruise along on a big touring bike, like the Gold Wing or Cavalcade, enjoying the scenery in all the lands I visit. Other times, a crisp little 250cc KX or YZ motocrosser lets me roost around local tracks where I can see who's been block passing or pit racing. When I'm covering a rural route, a Husky, KTM or Can-Am enduro bike helps me make good time going from town to town along powerlines or woods roads. I even use trials bikes sometimes; you haven't lived until you've climbed from Crested Butte to Aspen up through those Pearl, Pass rocks on a world class Beta or Honda! When I get behind schedule, nothing compares to taking shortcuts through the canyons on an Interceptor or a Paso. And when I'm cruising the world's major cities, that 1400 Intruder -or the original, Harley-Davidson, really makes my job fun. But I'll tell you what. I'm really anxious to check out that new Suzuki 500 . Quad Racer! That thing should Magazine: "MOTORCYCLIST and DIR T RIDER make it seem like Christmas every month!
