Motoworld, the first and only weekly motorcycle news magazine show on national television has announced a new schedule and network for the 1987 season. Beginning January 4, each new edition will be telecast every Sunday on the Nashville Network at 11 :00 a.m., 5:00 p.m. (repeat), 9:00 p.m. (repeat) and 2:00 a.m. (repeat). All times are EDT. Hosted by Larry Maiers, the new format will consist of hour-long shows and will run in conjunction with the Nashville Network's "All Sports Sunday." Northern California Motoring Press A sociation will fete Camel Pro champ Bubba Shobert as Motorcyclist of the Yearat their.annual banquet in San Francisco on Friday night, january 23. Road racer Don Greene will receive an award for his contribution to motorsports after winning his third consel;:utive Formula Two title. Greene was last year's MPA Motorcyclist of the Year. Contrary to what was recently printed about Duke Dowell winning the District 36 Cross Country Series number one plate, a mistake has been found by cross country steward Ray Hinson and in fact Lance McPhee won both the November 23 Monster Run in Nevada and the District 36 title. Three-time World Champion road racer Freddie Spencer appears fit and ready to return to the GP circuit in '87 after having missed most of the '86 season due to a tendinitis problem and subsequent surgery on his right wrist. Spencer and American Honda racers Wayne Rainey and Bubba Shobert tested at Daytona International Speedway last week. Unless he finds a major sponsor that' wbat he'll do. The AMA Grand National Championship Series will, no doubt, be full of surprises for tbe '87 season. Former World and National Champion observed trials rider Bernie Schreiber will be contesting the '87 AMA/NATC National Championship Series. In addition, Schreiber will be conducting a series of observed trials schools. Anyone interested in attending one of the two-day schools in southern California on January 31- February 1, February 7-8 and February 14-15 should contact David Pyle at 714/650-8769 evenings. The annual Isle of Man TT road race meeting will take place from May 24 through June 5,1987. Saturday, May 30, will see the running of the TT Formula One and Sidecar Race A. The Junior TT and another sidecar race will take place on Monday, June I. The TT Formula Two World Championship race and Band D Production class races will be run on "That was the ride of my life," said Team Honda road racer Wayne Rainey after he took a spin on Freddie Spencer's Honda NSR500 GP bike at Daytona International Speedway on Wednesday, December 10. ''I've never ridden anything with that much horsepower compared to what it weighs," said Rainey. "The acceleration is incredible. You have to have it pointed in the right direction' when you get back on the gas out of a corner. I can see where it could be a handful." Rainey spent most of the test session on his Honda VFR750 superbike and turned in a 1 minute, 56.2 s.econd lap. "That was d~me on Dunlop tires and is right where we qualified for the Daytona 200 In March. I'm real pleased," said Rainey, adding, "I'm going to win the 200 this time." Wednesday, June 3, with the A and C Production race and Senior race taking place on Friday, June 6. Thompson for control of Stadium Motorsports Corporation the southern California £irm which promotes speci£ied AMA Supercross Series events - was won today by Goodwin in federal bankruptcy court. Goodwin, who was backed by the finances of southern California businessman Charles Clayton (no relation to Cycle News President Charles C. Clayton), purchased SMC assets for 125,000 casb and 500,000 in securities. . Tbe buyout will lead ~o the formation of a new company, reportedly called Supercross, Inc., and guarantees that SMC-promoted Supercross events will be held as scheduled. Legally, the new firm will be owned 50% by ClayLOn and 50% by Goodwin's wife Diane. Realistically, it' notbing more than Stadium Motorsports with a new name. Goodwin, who has no legal interest in the new firm, will be retained to manage tbe company for an annual salary or $240,000. The -struggle for control of SMC began in 1985 after an independent trial judge awarded Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group $400,000 in damages following dissolution of a short-lived partnership between MTEG and SMC in 1984. While awaiting appeal, the liability has grown to about $800,000, including attorney's fees and interest earned on the initial judgement. That appeal is expected to be heard late in 1987.
