DeVane scores at Dade CityMX By Athie Sanders DADE CITY, FL, NOV. 15 Yamaha Support rider Vince DeVane flaunted his stuff while putting claims to the overall win in the special Open Money Class held during round 18 of Dade City Raceway's Points Championship Series. DeVane shared the top split of the $500 purse, based on each moto finish, with T&D Yamaha's Keith Oelerich. Oelerich took the lead right off the bat in the first .moto and ran away. Behind him Seminole Honda's John Reinholt and DeVane tangled and went down in the first turn and Alan Crum slipped into second. DeVane came back into the race in £ifth place then opened the throttle. He pushed on Reinholt's rear fender as he attempted a move on Crum, but Reinholt jumped out of a berm, allowing DeVane to shoot around. Crum held DeVane off for a couple of laps, then the Yamaha pilot snuck under him to take over second. Reinholt closed on Crum, although he was not able to get by. Oelerich kept his lead and led DeVane across the finish line with Crum, Reinholt and Glenn Sommer.. Ville rounding out the top five. Reinholt said, "I got right up to Crum, but I couldn't get by. He didn't give me an opening. The track is tight in most places, and short of doing something unsportsman-like, there was no way of getting around ' him." Reinholtjumpedoutfrom, as Crum followed, at the start of the second moto, but they slid down in the first turn and took a good part of the pack with them. Sommerville, riding the only l25cc bike in the field, climbed 26 the lead. DeVane also pushed through and came out of the first turn behind him. Somerville opened it up and charged. DeVane kept on his tail as the two pulled away from the pack, leaving Cliff Giles to held Mike Bremer behind him in a distant fourth. Craig COns~':ino rode a lonely fifth until ()felerich worked his way up through 'the pack to challenge him. Oeleri€h made his move on Constantino, but.;rollided with him, taking himself 'owt... As Constan'tioo-moved into third, DeVane scoope~tUhder Somerville to take over the'~.ft:einholtappe¥ed .~, at Constantino's back door in time to watch him overshoot a berm immediately after doubling the doubledoubles. Constantino's bike folded into the loam, taking with it his chances of an up front finish. Reinholt followed the fast charging DeVane and Somerville across the finish line. Oelerich and Crum were not far behind. DeVane had the overall, Oelerich was second, and Somerville nailed down third ahead of Reinholt and Crum. Joe Bromley took his second win in (he l25cc class and is almost tied with the onry other winner in die class, Todd Stith, as they head into the final race in two weeks. Mike Sponseller recovered from a bad outing the previous week to claim his third 80cc win. With onlY'one more race remaining, most of the point races are still close. Although no rider has clinched his class yet, Hollister does lead the 360cc c!ivision by almost 25 points, with 30 the maximum you can get in one meet. The closest class is the l25cc division where Stith leads Bromley by about two points. Farris put on a tremendous exhibition of riding ability in his semi and final. He started on the penalty line and took the lead for good with two laps to go in the semi. In the final, he got out of the second turn in the tightly bunched pack behind Burkholder, Tom Majeski, Todd Kendig and Paul Crumling. Farris got a break when Kendig and Randy Texter thinned out the field in the fourth turn, giving Farris a distant third spot. Just past the halfway point, Farris put his Gary Nixon Enterprises/M.J. Sponseller/Nolan Helmets/Norm's Motorcycle World-sponsored Bultaco into second ahead of Majeski. With Burkholder several yards in front, Farris cut the lead down and as they took the white flag, Farris slipped under Burkholder as they went into the first turn, taki ng the lead as a highly enthusiastic crowd roared its approval. Hollister grabbed the lead from Joe White and Van Rittenhouse as the 360cc class competitors started their final. Hollister put his Rabbi Racing/ Maryland Yamaha-Suzuki-sponsored Bultaco several lengths in front to win, Rittenhouse and White battled . the entire distance for second. After breaking in the first two finals while running in the top four, Rittenhouse's Bultaco finally stayed together, giving him second. Woods led Scott Saunders and Taylor White out of the second turn at the start of the 250cc final. With Woods pulling away and winning, White was content to stay in third, since Sa unders was on one of his Taylor White Racing Yamahas, and in contention for the class title. With several of the top points contenders in this class not making it, Whitejumped into a tight battle for third overall. Bromley wasted no time emerging from the second turn in the 125cc final in first wi'th Mike Varnes becoming his shadow for the next 15 laps. Nick Taylor and Bruce Triplett held down third and fourth spots. After getting bumped around at the start, Todd Stith moved into fifth by the halfway point, battling with Georgie Price. Bromley could only k«p the rookie expert two lengths back most of the race, until he put a lapped rider between them in the late laps. Sponseller grabbed the lead from Paul Southard and Kevin Varnes as the 80cc final got underway. With three laps left. Varnes slipped by Sou- thard coming off the fourth turn and closed up Sponseller's winning margin to a bike length at the flag. ' Results 80: 1. Mike Sponseller (Han); 2.
