Yamaha-mounted Vince DeVane charged into the lead at the start of the first 250cc A maLO with Jon McCabe, Mike Brt;mer and Reinholt pushing from behind. When the checkered £lag came out it was still Reinholt out front with DeVane second. Mark Peterson moved up to follow McCabe in for fourth, forcing Bremer to settle for a fifth place finish. T&D Yamaha's Keith Oelerich charged down the straightaway sideby-side with McCabe as they fought over the lead at the start of the second maLO, but it was Reinbolt who held on and stuffed it through the first turn to come out in front. DeVane, McCabe and Alan Crum worked their way in between Oelerich, leaving him in fifth. DeVane put the pressure on the leader as the two moved out, and Oelerich moved up to ride behind McCabe, but found the door closed.
