Schmit, Warren, Keller smoke Raceway Park MX By Rosanne Lukaitis ENGLI HTOW ,NT, OCT. 18-19 Kawasaki riders Donny Schmit and Ed Warren together with Honda-mounted JoJo Keller took the Expert clas es by storm in one of the most prestigious races held at Raceway Park - the lOth Annual Kawasaki Motocw s Race of Champions. In the 125cc Expert c1.:tss main, 40 top-notch racers waitf'J for the gate lO drop. Ron Ticheno; jumped out to an early lead by gnbbing the holeshot. Heading int0 the back of the track Schmit took the lead with Warren in seco'ld and Tichenor in third. Warren jammed to the inside line of the supercross section and Schmit went wide leaving Warren OUI in front, but soon after, Schmit stole the lead back. Schmit, Warren and Tichenor sailed their Kawasakis away fro:,) the rest of the pack. A fast and furious pace was set and halfway through the moto, Schmit got held up by a lapped rider. This left the door open for Warren to move into the lead again and he never let go. Sweeping the earlier heat race and the main, Warren look a first-place overall, while Schmit finished second; Tichenor third. With a 1-6 score Mike Jones took a fourth overall and Keith Bowen fifth. An incredible amount of skill and energy erupted in the 250cc Expert main, when Schmit took an early lead and ran the molO wire-to-wire. Mickey Kessler and Tichenor, Jones, Keller and Jerry Seip kept Schmit in close sight going over the V.I.P. steps. ; It was hot dicing for the lOp positions' as they lapped slower traffic. At the finish it was Schmit taking the molO and first overall. Second place in the molO went to Keller but second overall with a 1-3 score was Kessler. Overall finishes were Keller third, Keith Bowen, Jones, Tichenor, Chris Fischer, Kurt McMillian, Greg Bowen and Sanford Buchalter in that order. The final for the Open Expert class . saw Keller taking the early lead with Kessler in a close second. Billy Liles moved into third in the supercross section and closed the gap on Kessler. Chip Anacher and Seip keeping the leader in close sight. Lap four had Keller still in the lead with Kessler on his rear tire, both of them pulling away from third place Liles. Halfway through the moto, Kessler had a 10second lead over LiJes and was only two seconds behind Keller. Moving up through the pack, McMillian and S tacy were positioning for fourth and fifth. The final moto finished with Keller out in front ahead of Kessler. Liles finished in third. ...
