National Enduro (Continued from page 8) direction. I followed a little loop that went around a check, and when I reached the next reset I was way off. I started to ride back on the trail but I decided to sit there then go on. I talked to a guy'about it and he know what I did. so I really don't know what's going to happen." Then during the la t loop Russell got lost. "I thought I was following the ribbons, then the next thing I know I'm lost. Everything looks the same out there and I came up to a split section of the trail; I looked one way, I looked the other way, so I just kept going on the same trdil. I figured something was wrong, so I turned around and ran into Jeff Fredette. Then we both kept going and finally found the trail." After the enduro, it was officially decided that Russell be disqualified for missrng that earlier check he blew, ince no other A rider did the same. Hawkins also got lost on the last loop and ran into a few minor problems, causing him to lose time. ,"I certainly didn't set the woods on fire today, by no means," said Hawkins. "They got these trees out here like steel, but I really had a good time and enjoyed the race. I was more-or-Iess in left field all day." Riding on minute one and avoiding most of the dust, Palenske was having a good ride after the first loop, but heading into the final gas stOp located near the pits, his Honda CR2S0 ran out of gas. "Luckily it ran out where it did," said PaJenske. "I wa able to push it to my truck and put gas in it; I couldn't make itto the ga stop. It was close. "I had a real good ride," said. Palenske, "and the last loop was pretty tough. My mileage wa of[ a little but itdidn't really matter because it was so wide open. I lost IS and 20 points at the last two checks." "You always feel a little better when you do good," said Irwin after taking the overall win. "I didn', have too many problems, but I did get lost on the third loop. I weill down thi really nice trail but it was the wrong one. orne guys were coming up it and they said there were no ribbon '. So I turned around and it cost me about a minute and a half, but I carried that for the last three checks. "In the final loop, I lost 34 minute, ,. said Invin, "the speed averages were so high I never even looked at my roll chart. They never let up; the trail was very, very light and technical.· You were lucky if you could maintain the average let alone make any time." • Results OVERALL: 1. Jeff Irwin (Hus); 2.
