The lO-race series started in April with each event spaced throughout the season LO best avoid con. flicts with other events. The Classic was spectacularly suc- .. cessful for the SMX club with n~er and spectator attendance breakIng mar:ty re~ords at the three south.ern California tracks used for the event. With DeAnza and Perns Raceways each hosting four races whil~ Glen Helen was the course of chOIce for two, ~e final battle .for the.$IOO,OOO In pnzes an~ contingenCies came down to the fmal race at Perns. And while Mabery went home with the d.ay's ~ig purse i~ was Intermediate nder Jimmy LeWIS who won the series point chase and the first of four Yamahas donated by Yamaha Motor Corporation, the California Yamaha Team ~nter Dealers and four local dealershIps - La Habra Yamaha, Orange CountyCycle, Malcolm Smith Cycles, and Sunwest Yamaha. Lewis was first but far from last in the prize-winning points chase as the: top I OO.com~titors in the series will all re<:elve pnzes at the awards presentauon to be held at Glen Helen Raceway at the intermission of the November 23 regular SMX Sunday race. In addi tion to the four YZ 125s, other prizes include Malcolm Smith gear, Answer gear, Bell helmets, Pirelli tires, Scott goggles, Silkolene oil products, Tsubaki chain, Acerbis plastics and White Power rear shocks donated by White Bros. The first 250 Pro moto featured a tough five-rider battle for the lead position as Mabery, Kevin Allman and Ti wartz, sandwiched Tony Spear and Frankie Brundage in the lead pack. Near the halfway poin! the final finishing order began to assert itself a Mabery moved to the front and Swartz and Spear faded. At the checkers Mabery had a comfortable lead with Allman second and Brundage third. Mabery once again proved dominate in the second round as he cruised to the checkers and the overall win. But the mud-slinging behind' the winning Yamaha intensified as Spear rode a determined moto to finish third behind Brundage. Spear's second moto performance moved him to third overall behind Mabery and Brundage as Allman had to settle for fourth and Swartz dropped to fifth. Win number two for Mabery came "lit the expense of Michael Craig, whose runner-up finish did not accurately reflect the excitement of his effprts. Brundage placed third overall just ahead of a charging Joey Tuttobene. Mechanical problems decimated the Open Pro class but finishers Mark White and Tim Cauby, both on Yamahas, split moto wins with Cauby getting the overall nod wi th the second moto tie-breaker. In recent months Craig Davis has certainly had the measure of the Intermediate classes, sometimes winning all three displacement categories and this Sunday he went two-for-two as he piloted his Yamahas to the front of both the 250cc and Open races despi te very intense competition (rom fellow Yamaha rider Kenny Maddux. Maddux picked up a moto win in each class but Davis got the points when they counted most to leave Maddux with the number two trophy in each event. Series winner Jimmy Lewis placed third in the 250c class. Keeping the Yamaha win sv-eak alive in 125cc Intermediate action was winner Brett Duncan who outpointed Lewis for the win. Three-time ational MX Champion Gary Jones clinched the top Vet Expert position with another win. Yamaha-mounted Jones has been at or near the front of every series race in what many con ider the toughest class of all as many Vet Expert class riders still ride Pro classes and often finish higher in the money classes than in the Vet Expert battles. Yamaha-mounted David Chunn edged Mike Johnson for the Vet Intermediate win. The Vet Novice win went to Frank Mierau as he cruised his Honda to the overall win despite a two-moto chase by runner-up Jack McCormick. Yamaha riders Steve Bussell and Ed Duncan dueled in the Old Timer Expert class with Bussell taking the win and Duncan placing second. Cycle News ad master Terry Pratt rode his Yamaha to the Old Timer Novice class victory, winning both motos in the process. Keeping the race close were Tom Bristol and Chris Tuttobene, who placed second and third, rc;spectively. • Results OPEN PRO: 1. TIm cauby fVam); 2. Mark Whha (Yam~ 250 PRO: 1. Jeff Mabery (Vam); 2.
