Carlos Cardus. The Ducati 85'Occ prototype won by 16 laps over me Swiss Honda of Kellen-Monsch-Loser, by 19 laps over me Yamaha of Gonzales de Nicolas-Morante-Rodriguez and the fourm place machine, four laps back of third, was the Honda of the Dutchmen Pajic and Vaerenbengh who teamed with Spaniard Quique de Juan. The battle to decide me title was for fifm place between the NoyesProus-Taberna Yamaha and me Ducati of Bulto-Lasheras-Martenell. "From six in me morning until me finish Sunday evening we were working to beat the second Ducati. It took until noon to get onto the same lap, but we had a slow pit stop when Gustavo Taberna, our third rider, locked the front brakes and fell off in the pits. We were six minutes changing tires, brake pads, and a foot rest. The Ducati also pitted for tires and fuel, so we found ourselves again a lap and a half back with five and a half hours to go. We had to do it all over again," said Noyes. The Noyes Yamaha had been wimout a rear brake since the fifth hour of the race when the right side footrest bracket broke. Wim an hour and a halE to go me two machines were once again on the same lap. When me pace car was called out to set the pace under the yellow light because of an accident, Prous was able to come onto level terms with Martinell. When the green EIag came out again Prous began to pull out an advantage over Martinel!. Both riders were scheduled to ride through to the end of the race, but while the Ducati would have enough fuel, the Yamaha would need anomer five liters to run me last quarter hour. The Ducati-Pielsa team stopped Martinell and substituted meir fastest rider, Ignacio Bulto, son of me founder of the Bultaco factory. The pitstop took only seven seconds. To counter m'is move me Yamaha stopped and NoyeS went out to replace a tiring Prous. Five liters of gas were taken on and the stop was timed at II seconds. The last 45 minutes was seen by 50,000 at the circuit and by millions watching on Spanish TV. At one point Bulto cut the lead to 30 seconds, but at the flag Noyes was in front by almost a minute. A computer error threatened to ruin the day for Noyes and Prous, however, as the Ducati was listed fifth and me Yamaha sixth. Ducati Spain was jubilant because this would have meant me riders title for Grau and the manufacturer's tile for Ducati Mecca . But in a fine show of sportsmanship Ignacio Bulto, whose Steve Wynn-prepared Ducati is .not part of .the works team, came forward to say mat according to his lap charts me Yamaha had beaten him. "We wanted that place and we wendor it, but wedidn'tget it and we don't want to take advantage of a computer mistake.... said the former Spanish motocross and trials champion. A full check ofthe lap scoring took three hours, but confirmed that me Yamaha had come in a minute ahead of me Ducati and that Noyes and Prous were Spanish Endurance Racing Champions. Noyes is road test editor for Spain's "Solo MOto magazine and also covers the World Road Racing Championships both as a journalistand as occasional commentator for Spanish TV. For 1987 he and Prous will defend their Spanish title with a Yamaha FZRlooo, while Noyes hopes to ride the World Championships along with ~RglishmanKen81ake on a Yamaha FZX750.
